The 5VZ-FE 3.4L engine is legendary, but the factory vacuum lines and the plastic VSV (Vacuum Switch Valve) nipples are baked brittle by decades of engine heat. Do not yank the factory hoses off. Use a pick tool or gently twist them loose with pliers first. Also, the factory MAF sensor screws are incredibly soft—press firmly with your Phillips screwdriver so you don’t strip the heads.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and allow the ECU to reset.
- Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the Mass Air Flow sensor on the factory intake tube. Press the locking tab and pull the harness plug straight out. Do not pull by the wires.
- Remove the Vacuum Lines: Using your needle-nose pliers, pinch the factory spring clamps and slide them back. Gently twist and pull the PCV and vacuum hoses off the factory intake resonator.
- Loosen the Clamps: Grab your 10mm socket or a flathead screwdriver to loosen the hose clamps securing the intake tube to the throttle body and the factory airbox.
- Remove the Airbox: Use a 12mm socket and a 6-inch extension to unbolt the factory airbox from the fender apron. Pull the entire clunky OEM intake silencer assembly out of the engine bay.
- Extract the MAF Sensor: Carefully remove the two screws holding the MAF sensor to the factory housing using a #2 Phillips screwdriver. Pull the sensor straight up. Set it in a safe, clean spot. Do not drop it or touch the fragile wire elements inside.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Toyota Tacoma T-100 (1995-1998) 3.4L Engine - Blue
- Prep the Throttle Body: Slide the supplied silicone reducer coupler onto the 5VZ throttle body. Slide two hose clamps over it, but leave them loose for now.
- Transfer the MAF Sensor: Carefully insert your factory MAF sensor into the billet flange on your new Blue Cold Air Intake tube. Secure it using the supplied hardware (typically requiring a Phillips screwdriver or small Allen key). Snug it down to create a vacuum seal, but do not overtighten and crack the plastic flange.
- Mount the Intake Tube: Drop the new blue intake tube into the silicone coupler at the throttle body. Align the mounting bracket on the tube with the factory chassis mounting point. Fasten the bracket down using a 10mm socket.
- Tighten Down and Connect: Lock down the silicone coupler clamps at the throttle body using an 8mm socket. Slide the new blue cone filter onto the end of the intake tube and tighten its band clamp.
- Reroute Vacuum Hoses: Connect the factory vacuum lines to the new welded aluminum nipples on the intake tube. Secure them with the OEM spring clamps using your needle-nose pliers. Plug the MAF sensor harness back in until it clicks.
- The ECU Relearn Protocol: Reconnect the negative battery terminal using your 10mm wrench. Start the engine. On the first startup of your 1995-1998 Toyota Tacoma T100 3.4L, the vehicle gas pedal should not be touched for 20 seconds until the ECU adjusts to the massive new volume of airflow. Let it idle and check for any hissing vacuum leaks.
