Performance Cold Air Intake System with Heat Shield for 1996–2004 GM 4.3L V6

The GM 4.3L Vortec V6 powered some of the most dependable compact trucks and SUVs of the late '90s and early 2000s—models like the S-10, Blazer, Jimmy, and Sonoma. Known for their bulletproof reliability, these vehicles often rack up 200,000+ miles with proper maintenance. This cold air intake system is designed to give your proven 4.3L V6 the airflow it needs to deliver stronger performance without sacrificing that legendary durability.

The factory intake prioritizes quiet operation, but that comes at the cost of restricted airflow. This system replaces the stock airbox with a high-flow design that pulls cooler, denser air directly into your engine. The included steel heat shield blocks radiant engine heat, preventing heat soak and ensuring consistently cooler intake temperatures. The result is noticeable gains in horsepower and torque, plus sharper throttle response when you need it most—whether towing a boat or passing on two-lane highways.

Performance Upgrades You'll Notice

  • Increased Power Output: Adds measurable horsepower and torque across the RPM range
  • Heat Shield Protection: Steel heat shield keeps intake air cooler for maximum performance
  • Improved Throttle Response: Eliminates sluggish acceleration from the restrictive factory intake
  • Better Fuel Efficiency: Optimized airflow helps improve combustion efficiency
  • Enhanced Engine Sound: Deeper V6 growl under acceleration
  • Reusable Filter: Washable high-flow filter reduces long-term maintenance costs
  • Durable Construction: Heat-resistant materials built to last

Direct Bolt-On Installation

This complete kit uses factory mounting points for a secure fit. Includes high-flow intake piping, washable performance air filter, powder-coated steel heat shield, and all necessary couplers, clamps, and mounting hardware.

Compatible Vehicles

Fits: 1996–2004 GMC Jimmy, GMC Sonoma, Chevrolet Blazer, and Chevrolet S-10 with 4.3L V6 engine (NOT FOR CHEVY BLAZER PICKUP also known as CHEVY S10 BLAZER) for that see this:

Installation Note

Disconnect the negative battery cable before installation and leave it disconnected for at least one minute after completing the install. This allows your ECU to recalibrate for the increased airflow. Always work on a completely cooled engine.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic driveway bolt-on, but requires delicate handling of the 20-year-old plastic factory sensors.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm socket and ratchet (for battery terminal and heat shield bolts)
  • 5/16" nut driver or 8mm socket (for worm gear clamps)
  • Flathead screwdriver (for harness clips and prying)
  • Panel popper tool (to release factory wiring harness retainers safely)
  • Silicone spray (to help seat the IAT sensor into the new grommet without tearing it)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The S10Forum and Blazer community consensus is clear: the factory Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor pushed into the OEM rubber tube is universally brittle. Do not yank it by the wires. Twist the plastic sensor body gently to break the 20-year-old seal, then pull it out. Also, ditching the massive factory Vortec "air hat" resonator over the throttle body will finally give you the clearance you need for future distributor and fuel spider maintenance!

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start your 1996-2004 Chevrolet GMC Blazer Jimmy Sonoma 4.3L installation by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and clear the ECU’s long-term fuel trims.
  2. Unplug the Sensors: Use your hands and a flathead screwdriver to gently lift the locking tabs on the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor and IAT sensor harnesses. Unplug them and tuck the wiring out of the way. Use a panel popper to release any wire loom clips attached to the factory intake.
  3. Loosen the Clamps: Grab your 5/16" nut driver or 8mm socket to loosen the worm gear clamps securing the intake tube to the MAF sensor and the massive factory plastic resonator "hat" sitting on top of the throttle body.
  4. Remove the Vortec "Hat" and Airbox: Remove the central mounting wing nut or bolt securing the throttle body hat. Pull the hat straight up off the throttle body. Next, pull the factory airbox straight up and out of its rubber chassis grommets.
  5. Extract the IAT Sensor: Carefully twist and pull the fragile IAT sensor out of the old rubber tube. Set it safely aside where it will not get stepped on.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for GMC Jimmy Sonoma Chevy S10 & Chevy Blazer (1996-2004) 4.3L Engine

  1. Mount the Heat Shield: Assemble the new aftermarket heat shield and drop it into the factory airbox location. Secure it using the provided hardware and your 10mm socket.
  2. Transfer the MAF and IAT Sensors: This is critical. Transfer the factory MAF sensor into the new silicone couplers. Ensure the airflow directional arrow on the MAF points TOWARD the engine throttle body. Apply a tiny drop of silicone spray to the new intake tube’s rubber grommet, then carefully push the factory IAT sensor firmly into place.
  3. Route the New Intake Tube: Slide the new aluminum intake tube into the silicone couplers connecting the throttle body to the MAF sensor and filter. Ensure nothing rubs against the fan shroud, alternator, or accessory belts.
  4. Lock It Down: Position all worm gear clamps so you can easily reach them with your tools. Tighten every clamp down snugly using your 5/16" nut driver. Do not overtighten and crush the fragile plastic MAF housing.
  5. Reconnect and Calibrate: Plug the MAF and IAT sensor harnesses back in. Reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. Start the vehicle, but do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds to allow the ECU to recognize the new airflow volume, adjust the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve, and stabilize the idle.
