Porsche Carrera GT V10 Performance Air Filter: Why It Breathes Better

You don't touch the intake on a Carrera GT the way you would on a daily driver. The 5.7-liter V10 is a race engine with plates on it, and it breathes through two airboxes. Here's what a high-flow filter changes, and why it's one of the easiest upgrades you can make on this car.

Short answer: On a 2004-2006 Porsche Carrera GT, a performance panel filter swaps the dense factory paper element for oiled cotton gauze between epoxy-coated alloy mesh. That cuts intake restriction and sharpens throttle response. It drops into the factory airbox, and you don't need a tune.

Turn your sound on. Here's that V10 cold-starting and blipping in a driveway:

Why the Carrera GT V10 Is So Hungry for Air

The M80/01 V10 revs to 8,400 RPM and draws air through twin throttle bodies. At that speed, anything in the intake path that adds restriction costs you. Factory cellulose paper filters are built for sound damping and long service intervals, not for flow. Under sustained wide-open throttle, pleated paper creates a measurable pressure drop across the intake tract, and that starts to choke high-RPM breathing.

What the Performance Filter Does Differently

  • Oiled cotton gauze media: multiple layers held between epoxy-coated alloy mesh. That flows more air than paper and still stops contaminants down to 7 microns without the media breaking down.
  • One-piece molded frame: the polyurethane frame has no welded edges to fail, so it seals tight around the perimeter inside the carbon composite intake housing. In the product photos you can see the red molded frame and the pleated gauze.
  • Made for the Type 980 airbox: the photos show left and right panel elements shaped for the car's two airbox housings.
  • Drop-in, no tune: it doesn't change factory fuel trims or MAF sensor calibration, and it works with the factory Bosch Motronic ME7.1.1 engine management.

Installing It

This is a filter swap, not a fabrication job. Open each airbox housing, lift out the old paper element, check that the housing is clean, and seat the new panel so the molded edge seals all the way around. Close the housing back up and you're done. Before you order, check your year and engine, and compare your airbox shape and OEM filter size with the listing.

FAQ

Will this filter fit my Carrera GT?
It's a direct fit for the 2004-2006 Porsche Carrera GT (Type 980) with the M80/01 5.7L V10. Confirm your year and engine, along with your airbox shape and OEM filter size, before you order.

Do I need an ECU tune after installing it?
No. It drops straight into the factory airbox and works with the stock Bosch Motronic ME7.1.1 engine management, with no change to fuel trims or MAF calibration.
