Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The M60 and M62 V8 engines generate massive heat. Over two decades, the factory rubber intake boots and CCV (Crankcase Ventilation) plastic lines become baked, hard, and extremely brittle. Do not aggressively yank the factory airbox. If you tear a dry-rotted vacuum line during removal, you will introduce a massive vacuum leak, causing nasty idle surges and triggering P0171/P0174 lean codes. Furthermore, the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor hot-wire is fragile—treat it like a loaded grenade and never drop it.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 1993-2001 BMW 5 Series 4.0L 4.4L

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and protect the sensitive DME (ECU).
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the MAF sensor housing right behind the factory airbox. Depress the metal retaining clip or plastic locking tab (depending on your E34/E39 year) and pull the harness straight back. Tuck the wiring aside.
