Performance Sport Air Intake System for BMW E32 / E38 740iL (M60 / M62 V8)
The factory airbox in your BMW E32 or E38 740iL, while adequate for stock operation, acts as a significant restriction to your M60 or M62 V8 engine’s true potential. Its convoluted design, restrictive paper filter, and lack of thermal isolation choke the engine, limiting both horsepower and throttle response, dulling the visceral V8 experience.
This Sport Air Intake System is meticulously engineered to eliminate those bottlenecks. By replacing the entire restrictive factory assembly with a high-flow, mandrel-bent aluminum intake tube, a premium multi-layer cotton gauze air filter, and a robust heat shield, your 4.0L or 4.4L V8 can finally breathe freely. The result is a substantial increase in cold, dense airflow directly to your engine, unlocking documented gains in power, torque, and a far more responsive driving feel.
Why You Need This Upgrade
- Unleash Hidden Horsepower & Torque: By optimizing airflow and reducing intake restriction, this system allows your M60/M62 V8 to generate more power across the entire RPM range, translating to a stronger pull and improved acceleration.
- Instantaneous Throttle Response: Experience a dramatic improvement in throttle sensitivity and reduced lag. The high-flow design delivers a rapid rush of cold air, making your 740iL feel more eager and agile with every pedal input.
- Aggressive V8 Induction Sound: Amplify the glorious soundtrack of your BMW’s V8 engine. Enjoy a satisfying, deep induction roar under acceleration that perfectly complements the luxury and performance of your 7-series, while remaining refined during cruising.
- Superior Filtration & Longevity: The included premium, washable, and reusable air filter provides excellent filtration to protect your engine while flowing significantly more air than disposable paper filters, offering a lifetime of performance.
- Optimized Cold Air Delivery: Featuring a durable heat shield, this intake system effectively isolates the filter from engine bay heat, ensuring that your engine receives only cool, dense air for maximum power and efficiency.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 3/10 - A straightforward bolt-on job, but navigating 20-year-old, heat-baked Bavarian plastics requires a very gentle touch.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm socket, ratchet, and 6-inch extension
- 10mm combination wrench
- 8mm socket or nut driver
- 6mm nut driver or flathead screwdriver
- Panel popper (trim removal tool)
The M60 and M62 V8 engine bays run notoriously hot. After two decades, the factory plastic airbox mounts, corrugated intake boot, and CCV (Crankcase Ventilation) lines will be incredibly brittle. Do not yank or twist the factory intake assembly. If you snap a vacuum line during removal, you’ll be chasing idle surges and lean codes for weeks. Additionally, the Bosch MAF sensor is highly sensitive—treat the internal element like glass and never touch the hot wire.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights on your 1993-2001 BMW 7 Series 4.0L 4.4L.
- Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the Bosch Mass Air Flow sensor on the intake tract. Depress the metal retaining wire clip with a flathead screwdriver and pull the harness connector straight back. Tuck the wiring harness safely out of the way.
- Loosen the Intake Clamps: Using a 6mm nut driver or flathead screwdriver, loosen the hose clamps securing the factory corrugated rubber boot to the throttle body and the MAF sensor housing.
- Remove Airbox Hardware: Grab your 10mm socket and extension to unbolt the factory airbox mounting bracket attached to the inner passenger-side fender well.
- Extract the OEM Assembly: Carefully lift the factory airbox and rubber boot out of the engine bay. Use a panel popper to gently pry any attached wiring looms away from the plastic housing without snapping the brittle retaining clips.
Phase 2: Installing the Sport Air Intake System
- Transfer the Factory MAF Sensor: Carefully unbolt the factory MAF sensor from the OEM airbox housing using a 10mm socket. Slide the MAF into the new silicone couplers provided with your intake. Make absolutely sure the directional airflow arrow stamped on the sensor points toward the throttle body.
- Mount the Heat Shield: Position the supplied heat shield into the factory E32/E38 mounting locations. Secure the hardware using your 10mm socket to block radiant heat from the exhaust manifolds.
- Install the Intake Tube: Slide the new silicone couplers onto the throttle body and the MAF sensor. Insert the intake tube and tighten all provided T-bolt clamps firmly with an 8mm socket. Make them snug, but do not over-tighten and crush the piping.
- Fit the Performance Filter: Push the cone filter onto the end of the intake tube and clamp it down using an 8mm nut driver. Plug the MAF harness back in and press firmly until you hear the metal wire clip snap into place.
- System Relearn: Reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench and tighten it. Turn the key to start the engine. On the first startup, the vehicle gas pedal should not be touched for 20 seconds until the ECU adjusts to the newly increased airflow volume.
