  • Heat gun or hair dryer (mandatory for safely removing old breather hoses)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The 3.0L AVK engine bay is basically an oven. The corrugated plastic breather hoses and vacuum "spaghetti" attached to the factory intake boot will crumble if you look at them wrong. Use a heat gun on a low setting to gently warm up the plastic hose ends before squeezing the retaining clips. This prevents you from snapping the tabs off and buying a $150 replacement hose. Secondly, the MAF sensor connector clip is notoriously fragile—push the connector IN toward the sensor first, depress the tab, and then pull away to prevent breaking the locking mechanism.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part on your 2002-2005 Audi A6 3.0L

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and protect the ECU.
  2. Remove the Air Scoop: Use your panel popper tool to carefully pry up the center pins of the plastic retaining rivets holding the factory front air scoop and plastic ducting to the radiator core support. Pull the ducting away from the main airbox.
  3. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor on the intake tube. Carefully depress the locking tab and unplug the harness. Tuck the wiring aside so it doesn’t get snagged.
  4. Loosen the Clamps & Hoses: Use a flathead screwdriver to loosen the large hose clamp securing the factory rubber intake boot to the throttle body. Next, carefully unclip the secondary air injection (SAI) hose and PCV breather lines from the factory airbox and intake tube (remember to use your heat gun here if the plastic is rigid).
  5. Extract the Factory Airbox: Remove the mounting bolts holding the lower factory airbox to the chassis using a 10mm socket and an extension. Firmly pull upward to pop the airbox out of its lower rubber grommets and remove the entire assembly from the engine bay.

Phase 2: Installing the Sport Air Intake System for Audi A6 (2002-2005) with 3.0L SFI V6 Engine Red

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Carefully unscrew the MAF sensor from the factory housing using a T20 Torx driver. Transfer it to your new red aftermarket intake tube. Do not touch the sensor wire element inside the MAF; oils from your skin will ruin it. Secure it using the provided hardware.
  2. Install the Heat Shield: Drop the new heat shield into the space vacated by the factory airbox. Secure it to the OEM mounting points using your 10mm socket and the supplied hardware. Ensure it sits flush to block out radiant engine heat.
  3. Mount the Intake Tube: Slide the provided red silicone couplers onto the throttle body and the new intake tube. Slip the supplied worm-gear or T-bolt clamps over the couplers. Position the tube so it routes neatly into the heat shield area, then tighten the clamps snugly with an 11mm deep socket or flathead screwdriver. Do not over-tighten and crush the pipe.
  4. Reconnect Lines and Harness: Reattach your factory PCV breather lines and SAI hose to the CNC-machined ports on the new intake tube. Plug the MAF sensor wiring harness back into the sensor until you hear a distinct click.
  5. Mount the Cone Filter & Initialize: Attach the high-flow red cone filter to the end of the intake tube inside the heat shield area and tighten the final clamp with your flathead screwdriver. Reconnect the negative battery terminal. On the first startup, turn the key and let the vehicle idle; the gas pedal should not be touched for a 20 seconds until the ECU adjusts to the new airflow volume and recalibrates the MAF readings.
