Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The B6 platform’s 3.0L AVK engine bay is notorious for baking its plastics. The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor wiring harness is extremely short, and the retaining clip on the connector is practically guaranteed to snap if you force it. Push the connector IN first, press the release tab with a small flathead screwdriver, and then pull it off. Furthermore, be hyper-aware of the brittle vacuum lines crossing over the factory airbox. Snap one, and you’ll be chasing a rough idle and a Check Engine Light (CEL) for days.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket to prevent check engine lights and reset the ECU on your 2002-2005 Audi A4 3.0L.
  2. Remove the Fresh Air Snorkel: Locate the plastic ram-air duct at the front of the core support. Use your panel popper or flathead screwdriver to carefully pry up the retaining clips and slide the snorkel out of the factory airbox.
  3. Disconnect the MAF Sensor: Carefully unplug the MAF sensor harness using the push-and-click method described above. Do not pull on the wires! Tuck the harness safely out of the way.
  4. Loosen the Intake Hose: Use your 8mm nut driver to loosen the hose clamp securing the corrugated factory intake tube to the throttle body inlet. Pull the tube free.
  5. Extract the Factory Airbox: Remove the mounting hardware securing the lower airbox to the chassis using your 10mm socket. Carefully lift the entire B6 airbox assembly out of the engine bay, ensuring you don’t snag any of those brittle vacuum or coolant lines.

Phase 2: Installing the Sport Air Intake System for Audi A4 (2002-2005) with 3.0L SFI V6 Engine Red

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Using your T25 Torx bit, carefully remove the two screws holding the delicate MAF sensor in the factory housing. Gently pull it out—do NOT touch the hot wire inside—and transfer it into your new aftermarket intake tube using the provided hardware.
  2. Mount the Heat Shield: Lower the new custom heat shield into the engine bay. Align it with the factory mounting points and secure it down firmly using your 10mm socket.
  3. Install the Intake Tube: Slide the provided red silicone couplers onto the throttle body and the new intake tube. Secure them loosely with the provided worm-gear clamps. Position the tube so it clears all hoses, then lock it down tight using your 8mm nut driver.
  4. Mount the Red Air Filter: Attach the high-flow red cone filter to the end of the intake tube inside the heat shield area. Tighten the filter clamp securely with your 8mm nut driver.
  5. Reconnect and Calibrate: Reconnect the MAF sensor harness until it clicks securely. Reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm socket. Crucial step: On the first startup, turn the key and let the vehicle idle. Do NOT touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. This allows the ECU to adapt its fuel trims to the new, higher volume of airflow.
