Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The Gen 2 3.5L EcoBoost uses a quarter-turn twist-lock Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor and delicate plastic quick-connect Crankcase Ventilation (CCV) fittings. Under-hood heat makes these plastic locking tabs extremely brittle. Never pry the IAT sensor or CCV collars with a metal screwdriver—use gentle thumb pressure to depress the release tabs, or you will snap the locking lugs and end up with unmetered boost leaks or a persistent check engine light.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 2017-2019 Ford F-150 3.5L

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to reset the fuel trim learning tables and prevent short circuits.
  2. Disconnect Electrical & Vacuum Connections: Slide back the red locking tab on the IAT sensor harness located on the driver’s side intake tube and unplug it. Carefully squeeze the quick-release ring on the factory PCV/CCV breather tube and pull the hose free from the intake tract.
  3. Remove the Front Air Scoop Clips: Use a panel popper tool or flathead screwdriver to remove the two plastic push pins securing the OEM front inlet scoop to the radiator core support.
  4. Loosen Turbo Inlet Clamps: Using a 7mm socket or 8mm nut driver, loosen the hose clamps securing the OEM dual intake y-pipe to the driver’s side and passenger’s side turbo inlet tubes.
  5. Unbolt and Extract the Factory Airbox: Remove the single 10mm bolt securing the lower airbox housing to the driver’s side inner fender. Unclip the top airbox lid clamps and pull the entire factory intake tract out of the engine bay. Ensure the lower rubber mounting grommets remain seated in the truck’s inner fender tray.
  6. Safely Remove the OEM IAT Sensor: Locate the IAT sensor in the removed OEM intake tube. Gently lift the small plastic retaining tab and twist the sensor counter-clockwise one-quarter turn to slide it out. Place it on a clean microfiber towel.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Ford F150 (2017-2019) 3.5L Ecoboost Engine

  1. Transfer the IAT Sensor: Insert the factory IAT sensor into the aftermarket intake tube’s dedicated port, ensuring the rubber O-ring seats cleanly without tearing. Rotate clockwise until it clicks firmly into the locked position.
  2. Mount the New Airbox Housing: Align the base pins of the new heat shield/airbox assembly with the factory rubber grommets in the fender well of your 2017-2019 Ford F-150 3.5L.   6. PCM Idle Relearn Protocol: Start the engine. DO NOT touch the throttle or gas pedal for at least 20 to 30 seconds. Allow the EcoBoost powertrain control module (PCM) to read the new baseline MAF/IAT airflow data and stabilize idle trims smoothly before taking your first test drive.
