Ram Air Intake System for Chevrolet Impala 3.5L / 3.9L V6 (2006–2008) - Direct Airflow & Better Throttle

This ram air intake system is designed to replace the factory air box on 2006–2008 Chevrolet Impala models equipped with 3.5L LZE or 3.9L LZ9 V6 engines. The system reduces intake restriction by eliminating the factory resonator box and corrugated intake tubing, using mandrel-bent T304 aluminum piping to create a direct air path to the throttle body. This results in improved throttle response, enhanced airflow efficiency, and measurable gains across the RPM range.

The intake uses smooth, mandrel-bent aluminum tubing to replace the factory plastic accordion-style intake tube. The design removes baffling and restrictive elements present in the stock intake system. Both the 3.5L LZE and 3.9L LZ9 engines share the same throttle body location and intake geometry, allowing this kit to provide proper fitment for both engine variants.

Performance & Design

Airflow Optimization: The system is engineered to improve airflow efficiency by eliminating the factory resonator box and corrugated intake tubing. The mandrel-bent aluminum piping maintains consistent internal diameter throughout each bend, reducing turbulence caused by the stock corrugated rubber hose. This allows the engine to reach peak torque earlier in the RPM range. Actual performance improvements will vary based on vehicle condition, elevation, ambient temperature, and existing modifications.

Throttle Response: The reduced intake restriction and direct air path allow the engine to draw air more efficiently during acceleration and passing maneuvers. This results in improved throttle response and power delivery throughout the RPM range, reducing the delayed response common with the factory intake system.

Construction & Materials

T304 Aluminum Construction: The intake tube is constructed from mandrel-bent T304 polished aluminum, which provides corrosion resistance and reduces weight compared to factory plastic components. The aluminum construction dissipates heat more efficiently than the factory resin components, helping to reduce intake air temperatures in the engine bay environment.

Filter Design: The high-flow air filter uses washable filter media that can be cleaned and reused. The filter provides adequate filtration while maintaining lower restriction than factory paper elements. The open-element design produces a more audible intake sound during acceleration, particularly under wide-open throttle conditions.

This allows the ECU to recalibrate fuel delivery and ignition timing to optimize performance with the modified intake system.

Filter Maintenance

Inspection Schedule: Inspect the air filter every 5,000 miles and clean if necessary. Driving conditions such as dusty environments, urban traffic, or performance driving may require more frequent inspection and cleaning.

Cleaning Procedure: Remove the filter from the intake tube. Gently tap the filter to remove loose debris. Apply an appropriate air filter cleaning solution to both the inside and outside of the filter element, working it into the filter media. Allow the cleaner to soak for approximately 10 minutes. Rinse the filter thoroughly with low-pressure water from the clean side out, continuing until water runs clear. Shake off excess water and allow the filter to air dry completely in a clean environment. Once fully dry, apply air filter oil evenly to the filter media according to product specifications. Allow the oil to wick through the filter material for approximately 20 minutes before reinstalling. Ensure the filter is completely dry before applying oil, as moisture will prevent proper oil absorption.

Compatibility Requirements

Engine Verification: This ram air intake system is designed for 2006–2008 Chevrolet Impala models equipped with 3.5L LZE or 3.9L LZ9 V6 engines across all trim levels including LS, LT, and LTZ. Both engine variants share the same throttle body location and intake geometry, ensuring proper fitment. Verify your vehicle's engine code before purchase.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - A straightforward bolt-on upgrade, but requires delicate handling of the factory Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor and aging W-Body plastics.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm socket and ratchet (For the battery terminal and factory airbox bolts)
  • 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver (For standard hose clamps)
  • T20 Torx driver (Specifically to safely remove the factory MAF sensor)
  • Needle-nose pliers (To release the factory PCV breather hose clamp)
  • Panel popper tool (To assist in removing plastic retaining clips without shattering them)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The 2006-2008 Impala W-Body platform is notorious for two things: brittle PCV breather hoses and a very sensitive MAF sensor. When disconnecting the PCV line from the rear valve cover, twist it gently before pulling so you don’t snap the plastic nipple. Furthermore, NEVER touch the exposed wire elements inside the MAF sensor during the transfer. The oils from your skin will burn onto the hot wire, causing immediate erratic idle and a Check Engine Light (CEL).

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and reset the ECU for the new airflow dynamics of your 2006-2008 Chevrolet Impala 3.5L 3.9L.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the Mass Airflow sensor on the factory intake tube. Slide the grey or red locking tab back, press down on the release clip, and carefully unplug the wiring harness. Tuck it out of the way.
  3. Disconnect the PCV Breather: Using your needle-nose pliers, squeeze the clamp on the factory PCV breather hose attached to the intake tube and pull it free. Be gentle with the aging rubber.
  4. Loosen the Throttle Body Clamp: Grab your 8mm socket and loosen the hose clamp securing the factory corrugated rubber tube to the throttle body. Wiggle the tube back to free it.
  5. Extract the Factory Airbox: Remove the hold-down bolt securing the lower airbox using your 10mm socket. Grab the entire airbox assembly firmly and pull straight up to pop it out of the lower rubber mounting grommets.
  6. Salvage the MAF Sensor: Place the factory tube on a clean workbench. Use your T20 Torx driver to remove the two screws holding the MAF sensor. Pull the sensor straight out gently. Do not drop it!

Phase 2: Installing the Ram Air Intake for Chevrolet Impala (2006-2008) 3.5L 3.9L V6 Engine - Red

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Insert your factory MAF sensor into the new precision-machined slot on the Red Ram Air Intake tube. Ensure the airflow directional arrow on the sensor points toward the engine. Secure it using the provided hardware and your T20 Torx driver or a standard Allen key if supplied.
  2. Mount the Heat Shield and Couplers: Lower the new aftermarket heat shield into the factory airbox location, securing it to the original mounting points with your 10mm socket. Slide the silicone reducer coupler onto your throttle body and snug it down with an 8mm socket.
  3. Route the Ram Air Intake Tube: Feed the new red intake tube through the heat shield and push the other end firmly into the throttle body coupler. Once positioned correctly to avoid rubbing against any metal components, lock down the remaining clamps with your 8mm socket.
  4. Connect the PCV Hose and Filter: Attach the provided PCV breather hose from the engine valve cover to the welded nipple on your new intake tube. Finally, slide the high-flow cone filter onto the end of the tube inside the heat shield and tighten the massive band clamp using your 8mm socket. Plug the MAF sensor harness back in and engage the locking tab.
  5. Reconnect and Calibrate: Reconnect the negative battery terminal using your 10mm wrench. Turn the key to start the vehicle. CRITICAL: Do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds on the first startup. The Impala’s ECU needs this uninterrupted idle time to read the increased airflow from the new ram air setup and adjust the fuel trims accordingly.
