The biggest headache on the C4/C5 V6 platform is the factory PCV breather system (known on the forums as the "spider hose"). After two decades of under-hood heat, this corrugated plastic tubing turns into absolute glass. If you muscle the factory intake off and snap a breather line, you will immediately trigger a Check Engine Light (CEL) and a massive vacuum leak. Heat the hose ends slightly with a hair dryer before pulling them off to soften the plastic.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights while you unplug critical sensors on your 1996-2000 Audi A6 2.8L.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor electrical harness. Firmly press the wire retaining clip and gently pull straight back. Do not pull by the wires themselves.
