Performance Ram Air Intake Kit for Audi A6 (1996-2000) (2.8L V6 Engine) - Blue
The factory intake on your ’96-’00 Audi A6 2.8L V6 was meticulously engineered for quiet operation, often at the expense of genuine performance. These stock systems typically feature convoluted plastic piping, restrictive bends, and often a dense paper filter, all designed to muffle induction noise. The net effect is a choked engine, particularly as RPMs climb, preventing your V6 from breathing freely and delivering its full potential.
Our Performance Ram Air Intake Kit directly addresses these factory limitations. We replace that bottleneck with a high-velocity, mandrel-bent T-304 aluminum induction pipe and a massive, free-flowing performance air filter. This direct replacement creates a smooth, unimpeded pathway for cooler, denser air to rush into your engine, giving your 2.8L V6 the ample oxygen it truly craves, translating directly to improved power and a more spirited driving experience.
Why You Need This Upgrade
- Real-World Horsepower & Torque Boost: Experience noticeable gains, especially in the mid-range, where you spend most of your daily driving. You’ll feel the engine pull stronger, making merging and passing a lot more confident.
- Crisp Throttle Response: Say goodbye to that “pedal lag” or hesitation. With a less restrictive path for air, your engine responds almost instantaneously to throttle inputs, making the car feel much more agile.
- Aggressive Intake Sound: One of the most satisfying upgrades! You’ll get that distinct, deep V6 growl when you lean into the throttle, a proper auditory reward for your performance upgrade, without being obnoxious at cruise.
- Superior Durability & Aesthetics: Crafted from high-grade T-304 lightweight aluminum, this intake won’t degrade over time like brittle plastic OEM components. The polished blue finish also adds a sharp, performance-oriented look under the hood.
- Optimized Combustion: By providing a consistent and ample supply of cooler, denser air, the engine’s air-to-fuel ratio can be optimized, leading to more efficient combustion and potentially better fuel economy when you’re not having fun with the added power.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 3/10 - Mechanically straightforward, but requires extreme patience with 20-year-old brittle German plastics.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm Socket, Ratchet, and Long Extension
- 10mm Wrench
- Flathead Screwdriver (or 8mm Nut Driver)
- T20 or T25 Torx Driver (depending on exact OEM MAF screws)
- Needle-Nose Pliers
The biggest headache on the C4/C5 V6 platform is the factory PCV breather system (known on the forums as the "spider hose"). After two decades of under-hood heat, this corrugated plastic tubing turns into absolute glass. If you muscle the factory intake off and snap a breather line, you will immediately trigger a Check Engine Light (CEL) and a massive vacuum leak. Heat the hose ends slightly with a hair dryer before pulling them off to soften the plastic.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights while you unplug critical sensors on your 1996-2000 Audi A6 2.8L.
- Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor electrical harness. Firmly press the wire retaining clip and gently pull straight back. Do not pull by the wires themselves.
- Loosen the Intake Clamps: Grab your flathead screwdriver or an 8mm nut driver and loosen the large worm-gear clamps securing the factory corrugated intake tube to the throttle body and the airbox housing.
- Disconnect Vacuum and PCV Lines: Carefully squeeze the spring clamps with your needle-nose pliers and slide them back. Gently twist and pull off the vacuum and PCV breather hoses connected to the intake tube. Remember the "Gotcha"—treat these lines delicately.
- Remove the Factory Airbox: Pop the metal retaining clips off the top half of the airbox. Use your 10mm socket and long extension to reach down and unbolt the lower airbox tray from the vehicle’s chassis. Lift the entire bulky assembly out of the engine bay.
Phase 2: Installing the Ram Air Intake (Blue)
- Transfer the MAF Sensor: Using your T20 or T25 Torx driver, carefully remove the screws holding the factory MAF sensor inside its housing. Transfer it into your new aftermarket intake pipe. Crucial step: Never touch the delicate wire element inside the sensor with your fingers, as the oils from your skin will ruin it.
- Install the Heat Shield: Drop the supplied aftermarket heat shield into the empty space left by the factory airbox. Secure it to the original chassis mounting points using your 10mm socket and the provided hardware.
- Route the Blue Ram Air Pipe: Slide the new blue silicone couplers over the throttle body and the aftermarket aluminum pipe. Secure the connections loosely using your flathead screwdriver or 8mm nut driver to tighten the worm-gear clamps. Once positioned correctly to avoid rubbing against engine components, lock the clamps down tight.
- Mount the Filter and Reconnect Hoses: Slide the high-flow blue cone filter onto the end of the intake pipe inside the heat shield and tighten its clamp with your flathead screwdriver. Carefully slide the factory PCV and vacuum hoses onto the provided nipples on the new pipe, securing them with the factory spring clamps using your pliers. Reconnect the MAF sensor harness until it clicks.
- The ECU Relearn Protocol: Reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position without cranking the engine and wait 30 seconds. Start the vehicle, but do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds while the ECU calibrates its fuel trims to adapt to the new, unrestricted airflow.
