Ignite the VQ35DE: High-Flow Ram Air Intake for Infiniti FX35 (2003-2006)

Who It’s For: Designed specifically for Infiniti FX35 owners running the legendary VQ35DE engine, whether you’re chasing faster quarter-mile times or just want a more responsive daily driver.

The Problem: If you’ve spent any time under the hood of an FX35, you know that the factory airbox for the VQ35DE is a compromise. It’s designed for quiet operation, not peak performance. This means restrictive pathways, turbulent airflow, and bottlenecks that choke your engine, especially when you’re asking for maximum power. That muted growl you hear? That’s the sound of your engine struggling to breathe through a restrictive straw.

The Solution: We engineered this Ram Air Intake to utterly transform your VQ35DE’s breathing apparatus. By replacing the convoluted factory setup with a streamlined, high-flow system, you’re allowing your engine to inhale a colder, denser charge of oxygen-rich air. This isn’t just about sound; it’s about optimizing combustion, sharpening throttle response, and putting more usable horsepower and torque to the pavement. You’ll feel the difference from the moment you hit the gas.

Why This is the Ultimate Upgrade

  • Enhanced Power & Torque: By reducing intake restriction and delivering a cooler, denser air charge to your VQ35DE, you’ll experience measurable gains in horsepower and torque across the RPM band. Expect snappier acceleration and a stronger pull all the way to redline.
  • Premium Durability & Cooling: Crafted from lightweight T-304 aluminum piping, this intake isn’t just for show. It’s built to last and, critically, it dissipates heat faster than plastic, ensuring the air entering your engine stays as cool as possible for optimal combustion efficiency.
  • Direct Fit Installation: Designed as a direct bolt-on replacement for your factory airbox, installation is straightforward. While disconnecting the battery to reset your ECU is a smart move, this kit ensures a perfect fit, making the upgrade process hassle-free.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - Straightforward bolt-on, but requires a gentle touch around sensitive VQ35DE sensors and brittle factory plastics.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm socket with a long extension and ratchet
  • 8mm nut driver (superior to a flathead for tightening hose clamps securely)
  • Phillips head screwdriver (specifically a #2 to correctly fit the MAF screws)
  • Needle-nose pliers (for removing factory spring clamps without slipping)
  • Panel popper tool (for safely removing the factory fresh air duct clips)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
Welcome to the VQ35DE platform. The biggest mistake 2003-2006 Infiniti FX35 3.5L owners make when working on their intake tract is touching the throttle body butterfly valve. Do NOT push the flap open with your fingers. The electronic throttle body (TB) on this engine is notoriously sensitive. Manually moving the flap strips the internal gears or trips the position sensor, requiring a highly frustrating "pedal dance" (Idle Air Volume Learning procedure) to fix a surging idle. Leave the TB flap alone. Additionally, be extremely careful with the factory PCV breather hose; after years of heat cycling, the plastic port on the valve cover is brittle and will snap if forced.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and protect the ECU.
  2. Remove the Engine Cover: Grab your 10mm socket and remove the nuts securing the plastic VQ engine cover. Lift the cover off and set it aside to gain full access to the intake tract.
  3. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor mounted on the factory airbox tube. Depress the plastic tab and carefully slide the harness plug off. Unclip the wire harness from its mounting points so it is completely out of the way.
  4. Disconnect the PCV Breather Hose: Using your needle-nose pliers, squeeze the metal spring clamp on the crankcase breather hose where it attaches to the factory intake tube. Do not yank it. Gently twist the hose to break the seal, then pull it off to avoid snapping the brittle valve cover port.
  5. Remove the Factory Intake Assembly: Use your 8mm nut driver to loosen the band clamps at the throttle body and the airbox. Take your panel popper and pry up the plastic push-pins holding the front fresh air scoop. Finally, use the 10mm socket to unbolt the lower airbox housing from the fender well. Pull the entire OEM intake assembly out of the engine bay.

Phase 2: Installing the Ram Air Intake for Infiniti FX35 (2003-2006) 3.5L Engine - Red

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: This is a critical step. Use your Phillips head screwdriver to remove the two factory screws holding the MAF sensor in the OEM housing. Gently pull it straight out without touching the delicate exposed wire elements. Insert the MAF sensor into your new Red Ram Air Intake tube, ensuring the airflow directional arrow points directly toward the throttle body. Secure it snugly with the provided aftermarket hardware.
  2. Mount the Heat Shield: Position the new performance heat shield in the empty factory airbox location. Align it with the factory mounting points and secure it to the chassis using your 10mm socket and the provided hardware.
  3. Install the Silicone Coupler: Slide the provided silicone coupler over the engine’s throttle body. Slide two band clamps loosely over the coupler so they are ready for the tube.
  4. Seat the Ram Air Intake Tube: Guide the new Red intake tube through the heat shield and push the upper end fully into the throttle body coupler. Once the alignment is perfect, tighten down all band clamps using your 8mm nut driver until snug. Do not overtighten to the point of crushing the aluminum tube.
  5. Attach the Filter and Hoses: Slide the high-flow conical filter onto the end of the intake tube inside the heat shield area. Lock it down with the 8mm nut driver. Connect the provided PCV breather hose from the engine valve cover to the welded nipple on your new intake tube. Finally, click the MAF sensor wire harness back into place.
  6. Execute the Startup Protocol: Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn the key to the ON position for 5 seconds without starting the engine to prime the electronics. Start the vehicle. Do not touch the gas pedal for 20 seconds. Let the vehicle idle so the ECU can properly adjust to the massive increase in airflow from your new setup.
