Unleash VTEC’s Fury: Ram Air Intake for Your Honda Prelude H22A4

Who It’s For: Designed specifically for 1997-2001 Honda Prelude owners running the legendary H22A4 engine. If you’re a performance enthusiast who appreciates what Honda built with the H22 but knows there’s more potential hidden within, this upgrade is for you.

The Problem: Anyone who’s spent time behind the wheel of a 5th gen Prelude knows that while the H22A4 is a gem, especially when VTEC engages, the factory intake system leaves a lot on the table. Honda engineers prioritized cabin quietness and emissions over outright flow, creating a convoluted, restrictive pathway that chokes off the engine’s ability to breathe at higher RPMs. That stock airbox and accordion hose? They’re performance inhibitors, plain and simple, preventing your H22A4 from delivering its full power potential and crisp throttle response.

The Solution: We engineered this Ram Air Intake to be a direct, high-flow replacement for the stock airbox and piping. By streamlining the air path, reducing turbulence, and drawing in cooler, denser air from outside the engine bay, this system directly corrects the factory’s design compromises. It allows your H22A4 to truly sing, delivering sharper throttle response, measurable horsepower and torque gains, and that aggressive induction note you’ve been missing. Trust me, you’ll feel the difference immediately, especially when you push past 5,000 RPM.

Why This is the Ultimate Upgrade

  • Sharpened Performance: Experience immediate and measurable gains in horsepower and torque, particularly in the mid-range and top-end where the H22A4 loves to rev. This isn’t just about peak numbers; it’s about crisper throttle response and more aggressive acceleration.
  • Premium Durability & Design: Crafted from lightweight, T-304 aluminum induction tubing, this system not only looks fantastic under the hood with its striking red finish but is also built to last. The aluminum construction ensures rapid heat dissipation, keeping the incoming air cooler, while the included high-quality, washable, and reusable performance air filter offers superior filtration without restricting airflow.
  • Seamless Installation: This kit is a custom-designed, direct bolt-on solution for your 1997-2001 Prelude. It replaces the entire restrictive factory air assembly, including the airbox and piping, with no cutting or major modifications required. All necessary couplers, clamps, and hardware are included, making for a straightforward installation that most enthusiasts can tackle in their garage.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic hand tools, but wrestling the factory BB6 resonator box out of the fender well requires some patience.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm and 12mm sockets with a long ratchet extension
  • 10mm combination wrench (for battery terminals)
  • 8mm nut driver or Flathead screwdriver (for hose clamps)
  • Panel popper tool (critical for removing brittle splash guard clips)
  • Needle-nose pliers (for factory spring clamps)
  • Silicone spray or soapy water (for sensor transfer)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The H22 Prelude community universally hates the massive factory intake resonator box hidden inside the passenger fender well. Don’t try to force it out from the top; you will crack your plastics or scratch your paint. Use your panel popper to remove the front passenger splash guard clips and drop the box out from the bottom. Also, the factory Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor is shoved into a 20-plus-year-old rubber grommet. DO NOT pull it by the wires. Twist it gently to break the seal before pulling.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start your 1997-2001 Honda Prelude 2.2L install by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and protect the ECU.
  2. Disconnect the Sensors and Hoses: Locate the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor on the factory intake arm. Press the tab and pull the harness connector off. Next, use your needle-nose pliers to pinch the spring clamp and pull the valve cover breather hose off the intake tube.
  3. Loosen the Intake Clamps: Use your 8mm nut driver or a flathead screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp securing the factory rubber intake hose to the H22A4 throttle body.
  4. Remove the Upper Airbox: Locate the two bolts holding the upper airbox to the chassis. Remove them using a 10mm socket and long extension. You can now pull the upper airbox and intake tube out of the engine bay as one piece.
  5. Evict the Resonator Box: Turn your steering wheel all the way to the left. Use your panel popper tool to remove the plastic clips securing the passenger side fender liner. Pull the liner back to expose the lower resonator box. Remove the mounting bolts with a 12mm socket and drop the assembly out from the bottom.

Phase 2: Installing the Ram Air Intake for Honda Prelude (1997-2001) 2.2L Engine - Red

  1. Prep the Throttle Body: Slide the provided silicone coupler onto your factory throttle body. Slip two provided worm-gear clamps over the coupler, and tighten the throttle body side slightly using your 8mm nut driver so it doesn’t slip off.
  2. Transfer the IAT Sensor: This is crucial. Carefully pull the factory IAT sensor from the old intake. Spray the rubber grommet on your new Red Ram Air Intake tube with a tiny bit of soapy water or silicone spray. Gently push and twist the factory IAT sensor into the new grommet until it seats fully. Never force it.
  3. Mount the New Intake: Guide the red intake pipe into the silicone throttle body coupler. Align the pipe’s welded mounting bracket with the factory threaded hole on the shock tower (where the old airbox sat). Secure the bracket using the provided vibration mount and 10mm socket. Tighten down the remaining coupler clamp.
  4. Install the Filter and Lines: Slide the red performance air filter onto the end of the intake pipe and clamp it down tight with your 8mm nut driver. Reconnect the valve cover breather hose to the nipple on the new intake pipe, and plug the factory wiring harness back into the IAT sensor until it clicks.
  5. The ECU Relearn Procedure: Reconnect your negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. Start the vehicle. Do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Let the Prelude’s ECU idle and adjust to the massive increase in airflow so it won’t throw a rough-idle code.
