High-Flow Stainless Steel Header for 1979-1985 Mazda RX-7 (12A / FB)

What It Does: Replaces the restrictive factory cast-iron exhaust manifold with a mandrel-bent stainless steel header to optimize exhaust scavenging and increase volumetric efficiency in the 12A rotary engine.

The Stock RX-7 Weakness

The original equipment on the 1979-1985 Mazda RX-7 utilizes a heavy, cast-iron exhaust manifold that is highly susceptible to heat retention and internal turbulence. In the 12A rotary engine, exhaust gas temperatures are significantly higher than in traditional piston engines. The stock manifold’s restrictive internal diameters and "thermal reactor" design (common on early SA22C models) create immense backpressure. This bottleneck forces spent combustion gases to remain in the housing longer, leading to localized hot spots, increased risk of apex seal degradation, and a measurable loss in high-RPM horsepower. Furthermore, the factory cast units are prone to cracking under the extreme thermal cycling inherent to Wankel powerplants.

The Engineering Solution

This performance header is engineered from high-grade stainless steel to provide a direct-flow path for exhaust gases. Featuring a 1-1 piping design with a 2.00" inlet and a 2.50" outlet, the assembly utilizes CNC-machined flanges to ensure a true, leak-free mating surface that resists warping under high heat. The TIG and MIG welded construction provides structural integrity for aggressive driving conditions. By transitioning to a mandrel-bent system, the header maintains a consistent internal diameter, which maximizes gas velocity and improves the scavenging effect—drawing more fresh air/fuel mixture into the combustion chamber. This thermal management improvement reduces engine bay temperatures and mitigates the heat soak that often plagues the 12A's carburetor or early fuel injection components.
