High-Flow Breathing for Ford & Mazda Zetec-SE and F-Series Engines

Who It’s For: Designed specifically for owners of classic Ford and Mazda platforms running the high-revving Zetec-SE (Sigma) and robust Mazda F-Series engine families. Whether you are daily driving a Fiesta or tuning a Puma for the backroads, this is the first step in optimizing your intake tract.

The Problem: The Zetec-SE and Mazda F-Series engines are known for their efficiency and willingness to rev, but the factory paper air filter is a major bottleneck. These stock filters are designed for silence and low cost, often resulting in significant air-flow constriction as they clog. This "chokes" the engine, leading to sluggish throttle response and decreased fuel economy as the engine fights to pull air through dense paper fibers.

The Solution: We utilize BMC’s race-bred technology to correct these factory limitations. Unlike standard filters, this BMC unit features a multi-layered cotton gauze soaked in low-viscosity oil, reinforced by an epoxy-coated alloy mesh. This "Full Moulding" system creates a single-piece filter without welded joints, ensuring the Zetec-SE receives a steady, laminar flow of clean air while providing superior protection against humidity and petrol fumes.

Why This is the Ultimate Upgrade

  • Optimized Airflow: Significantly reduces pressure drop compared to OEM paper filters, allowing for quicker turbo spool-up in GT models and sharper N/A throttle response.
  • Full Moulding Construction: The characteristic red rubber is injected into a single mould, eliminating weak points and ensuring a perfect, airtight seal inside your factory airbox.
  • Lifetime Durability: This is a "forever" filter. It is fully washable and regenerable using a BMC cleaning kit, meaning you’ll never have to buy another disposable filter for the life of the vehicle.

Installation & Tools

DIY Installation Guide: Performance Air Filter for 1987-2002 Ford Mazda Fiesta Probe 323 626

Congratulations on your purchase of a performance air filter for your 1987-2002 Ford or Mazda! This guide will walk you through the simple installation process, typically taking 15-30 minutes. Before you begin, gather your tools and ensure you’re working in a well-lit, safe area.

Tools You’ll Need:

  • Flathead Screwdriver (for hose clamps on some models)
  • Phillips Head Screwdriver (if air box uses screws)
  • 10mm Wrench or Socket (for battery terminal)
  • Clean Shop Rag

Installation Steps:

Step 1: Safety First & Prep

Ensure your 1987-2002 Ford Mazda Fiesta Probe 323 626’s engine is cool to the touch. Locate your vehicle’s battery and use the 10mm wrench or socket to disconnect the negative (black) battery terminal. This prevents any accidental electrical issues during the install.

Step 2: Locate the Factory Air Box

Identify the factory air filter housing. On most 1987-2002 Ford Mazda Fiesta Probe 323 626 models, this is a large, black plastic box typically located near one of the fender wells, connected to the intake manifold by an intake tube.

Step 3: Remove the Air Box Cover

Depending on your specific 1987-2002 Ford Mazda Fiesta Probe 323 626 engine and year, the air box cover will be secured by either metal clips, screws, or a combination. Release these clips or use your Phillips head screwdriver to remove any screws holding the top half of the air box in place. You may also need to loosen a hose clamp on the intake tube where it connects to the air box lid and gently wiggle the lid free.

Carefully lift and remove the air box cover. You might need to maneuver it around some hoses or wiring harnesses, but avoid forcing anything.

Step 4: Remove the Old Air Filter

With the air box cover removed, you’ll see the old, often dirty, factory air filter. Simply lift it straight out of the housing. Note its orientation as you remove it.

Step 5: Clean the Air Box

Inspect the bottom of the air box for any leaves, debris, or excessive dust. Use your clean shop rag to wipe out any foreign material. This ensures your new performance filter has a clean environment to draw air from.

Step 6: Install the New Performance Air Filter

Take your new performance air filter. Orient it correctly, matching the way the old filter was positioned, and carefully place it into the air box housing. Ensure it sits flush and creates a good seal around the edges.

Step 7: Reinstall the Air Box Cover

Carefully place the air box cover back into position. Ensure any tabs or alignment pins on the cover mate correctly with the bottom half of the air box. Re-engage all clips or reinstall the screws. If you loosened a hose clamp on the intake tube, tighten it now with your flathead screwdriver until snug, but do not overtighten.

Step 8: Reconnect Battery & Final Check

Reconnect the negative (black) battery terminal using your 10mm wrench or socket. Ensure all tools are clear of the engine bay. Double-check that all clips are secured, screws are tightened, and the intake tube is snug.

Step 9: Start the Engine

Start your 1987-2002 Ford Mazda Fiesta Probe 323 626 and listen for any unusual sounds. Take it for a short test drive. You should immediately notice improved throttle response and potentially a more aggressive engine note under acceleration. Enjoy your new performance!
