  • Shop vacuum or lint-free microfiber towel (to clean the lower airbox tract)
  • Dielectric grease or silicone spray (optional, for lubricating rubber sealing ribs)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
Vintage VW VR6 and Audi 5-cylinder airboxes are notorious for brittle plastic hinge tabs and fragile Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor harness connectors. Do not force the upper airbox lid backward against the accordion intake boot; doing so will split aged vacuum lines, snap the plastic retaining lip, or rip the idle stabilization valve (ISV) hoses. Take the extra 60 seconds to loosen the intake boot clamp so you can lift the lid straight up without stressing the intake plumbing.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and allow the fuel trims to clear.
  2. Disconnect the Sensor Harness: Locate the MAF sensor on your classic VW VR6 or Audi 5-cylinder intake tract. Carefully depress the wire-bail retaining spring or gently lift the locking clip with a small flathead screwdriver and pull the connector straight off. Do not yank on the wires.
  3. Loosen the Intake Accordion Boot: Use a slotted flathead screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp securing the intake bellows or MAF housing to the airbox lid. Gently wiggle the boot free.
  4. Release the Airbox Spring Clips: Unlatch the metal perimeter retaining clips around the airbox shell using your fingers or carefully lever them open with a flathead screwdriver.
  5. Remove the Old Filter: Tilt the upper airbox lid upward, lift the old paper filter out from the lower airbox tray, and inspect the lower airbox housing for road debris or deteriorated foam insulation.

Phase 2: Installing the Performance Air Filter

  1. Prep the Airbox Tray: Clean out all trapped dirt, sand, and leaves inside the lower airbox basin using a shop vacuum and a clean microfiber cloth to ensure no contaminants bypass the intake tract.
  2. Seat the Performance Air Filter: Place the new 182mm x 307mm Performance Air Filter into the lower airbox tray. Ensure the rubber perimeter gasket is seated entirely flat inside the channel without any binding or folded edges.
  3. Reassemble the Airbox Lid: Align the rear locator tabs of the airbox lid into their factory slots, then lower the lid squarely onto the filter frame. Snap all metal retention clips firmly back into place.
  4. Reattach Intake Boot & Sensor: Slide the intake boot back onto the MAF housing neck and torque the hose clamp down securely using a slotted flathead screwdriver. Reconnect the MAF electrical plug until the lock tab clicks into place.
  5. Reconnect Battery & ECU Calibration: Reattach and tighten the negative battery terminal with a 10mm wrench. On the first startup, start the engine and do not touch the gas pedal for 20 to 30 seconds to allow the ECU to calibrate its baseline idle air volume and adapt to the increased airflow.
