Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
On the 1991-2000 Volvo S70 V70 C70 (P80 chassis), the lower airbox rear hinge tabs and the Bosch Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor wiring harness connector are notoriously brittle after decades of heat cycles. Never hinge the airbox upper lid back aggressively without first loosening the intake hose clamp. Forcing the lid backwards will snap the rear plastic locating slots on the lower airbox housing or strain the delicate MAF pigtail wires.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  5. Extract the OEM Filter & Clean Lower Housing: Remove the old, restrictive paper panel filter. Use a shop vacuum and a lint-free microfiber cloth to remove accumulated road grime, leaves, and debris from the bottom of the airbox before installing the new unit.

Phase 2: Installing the Performance Air Filter Panel

  1. Seat the Performance Filter: Align the Performance Air Filter Panel into the lower airbox housing of your 1991-2000 Volvo S70 V70 C70. Ensure the perimeter urethane sealing bead is seated completely flat into the factory sealing channel with the mesh reinforcement facing the correct airflow direction (up toward the MAF).
  2. Re-engage Lower Hinge Tabs: Carefully lower the top airbox lid, ensuring the rear alignment tangs slide fully into their matching slots on the bottom housing without pinching the filter’s rubber edge.
  3. Fasten Retaining Clips: Snap all metal spring clips back over the airbox lid flanges by hand until firmly locked in place.
