Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
On the C4, C5, and D2 chassis Audi A6 S6 S8 platforms, the lower metal airbox retention clips love to unhinge completely and vanish into the belly pan abyss. Keep your hand underneath each clip as you unlatch it. Also, take extra care not to stress the aged, heat-soaked N75, EVAP, or Secondary Air Injection (SAI) vacuum hardlines routed tightly around the airbox housing—they crack under minimal flexing.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to reset fuel trim adaptations and prevent accidental short circuits or check engine lights.
  2. Remove the Fresh Air Intake Snorkel: Locate the plastic front intake scoop on your Audi A6 S6 S8 and unclip or pull it free from the front lock carrier and airbox inlet horn.
  3. Disconnect the MAF Sensor Harness: Locate the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor housing connected directly downstream of the upper airbox lid. Gently press the retention tab on the electrical connector using a flat-head screwdriver (or your thumb) and slide the harness free. Do not yank the wiring directly.

  6. Clean the Airbox Tray: Use a shop vacuum and a clean lint-free microfiber towel to thoroughly clean out the bottom of the airbox before introducing the high-flow element.

Phase 2: Installing the Performance Air Filter Panel for Audi S6 A6 S8

  1. Seat the New Panel Filter: Place the new performance panel filter directly into the lower airbox tray. Ensure the rubber perimeter sealing gasket drops squarely into the molded perimeter channel of the Audi A6 S6 S8 airbox housing without binding or pinching.

Do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds while the ECU stabilizes and registers base idle airflow through the new panel filter.
