Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The Achilles’ heel on these golden-era D-series airboxes is the brass threaded inserts molded into the lower plastic housing. After nearly three decades of heat cycles and road grime, the factory 10mm/Phillips bolts seize solid. If you crank on them dry with a screwdriver, the head will cam out, or worse, the brass insert will spin loose inside the lower box. Soak the bolt heads with penetrating oil 10 minutes beforehand and use a 10mm 6-point socket on a hand ratchet—never an impact or worn screwdriver.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: On your 1994-1995 Honda Civic HR-V 1.6L, loosen the negative battery terminal clamp using a 10mm wrench and isolate the cable away from the battery post to clear stored fuel trims and prevent electrical shorts.
  2. Inspect the Intake Breather and Sensor Wiring: Locate the OEM intake tract. Verify the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor harness connected near the rear of the intake arm is not tensioned. Gently unclip the wiring harness retainer using your fingers or a plastic panel popper so it does not stretch when moving the upper lid.

  5. Clear Out the Lower Airbox: Road grit, dried leaves, and debris collect underneath the panel element. Use a shop vacuum and a damp lint-free shop rag to thoroughly clean out the bottom of the OEM plastic box before unboxing your new performance filter.

Phase 2: Installing the Performance Air Filter Panel for Honda Civic 1994-1995 HR-V 1.6L V-TEC

  1. Seat the New Panel Filter: Orient the Performance Air Filter Panel with the wire mesh/pleated side facing upward toward the engine intake tract. Press the urethane perimeter sealing bead firmly down into the lower airbox channel on your 1994-1995 Honda Civic HR-V 1.6L. Ensure no gaps or wrinkled edges exist around the outer lip.

Do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds while the OBD1 ECU reads the baseline sensor signals and stabilizes the idle air control valve (IACV).
