The Mercedes Benz SLS AMG M159 dry-sump 6.2L V8 utilizes a symmetrical dual-intake arrangement. The factory lower airbox housings sit on press-fit rubber grommets, and the composite airbox lid screws thread directly into plastic. Do not use an impact gun or overtighten the T25 Torx screws during reassembly—stripping the plastic housings is an expensive mistake. Furthermore, inspect the rubber perimeter seal of each new filter to ensure it seats 100% flush in the lower guide channel; a pinched seal causes unmetered post-filter air leaks, triggering bank lean codes (P0171/P0174) and MAF contamination.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Open the trunk and disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to reset fuel trim adaptations and protect the sensitive electronics on your Mercedes Benz.
  2. Detach the Front Intake Ducts: Using a nylon trim panel popper, gently unclip the dual front intake scoop snorkels from the front core support bracket. Carefully collapse the accordion ducting rearward away from the radiator shroud.
  3. Disconnect the MAF Sensor Harnesses: Locate the twin Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor plugs on the intake runners downstream of each airbox. Depress the safety locking tabs with your thumb (or a small flathead screwdriver) and slide the electrical connectors off delicately. Set wiring safely aside.
  4. Unfasten the Airbox Lids: Using a T25 Torx driver, loosen the retaining fasteners on both the driver-side and passenger-side airbox upper lids. Note that these screws are captive on many Mercedes Benz OEM airbox assemblies and do not need to be removed completely from the upper lid.
  5. Extract the OEM Filter Elements: Lift the upper lid assemblies off the lower airbox bases. Pull the factory paper air filters straight out and set them aside.

Phase 2: Installing the Performance Air Filter for Mercedes SLS 6.2L (2010 - 2014)

  1. Sanitize the Intake Chambers: Before opening the new performance filters, inspect the bottom of both OEM lower airbox trays for road sand, leaves, or grit. Use a shop vacuum and a clean microfiber towel to wipe the interior clean, ensuring zero particulate matter can enter the M159 throttle bodies.
  2. Seat the New Performance Filters: Drop the new dual performance filters into the lower airbox housings. Press firmly along the perimeter rubber or silicone gasket with your fingers to ensure the sealing bead sits completely inside the lower retaining channel on both the driver and passenger sides.
  3. Secure the Airbox Housings: Realign the upper airbox lids over the newly seated filters. Hand-thread all T25 Torx screws first to prevent cross-threading, then tighten them down in an alternating criss-cross pattern with your T25 Torx driver until snug (do not exceed 2.5 Nm / 22 in-lbs).
  4. Reconnect Ducting and Sensor Plugs: Snap the front intake snorkel ducting back into the front core support mounts until the locking clips click. Reattach both MAF sensor wiring harnesses, pushing until the clip locks firmly in place.
  5. Battery Reconnection & ECU Base Adaptation: Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench. Turn the ignition on (Engine OFF) for 30 seconds to let the throttle actuators sweep. Then start the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG engine and do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds so the ECU can adapt to the improved base airflow at idle.
