The Wrench Time

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm wrench or socket (battery negative terminal)
  • T25 Torx driver (air cleaner housing case screws)
  • Flathead screwdriver or nylon panel popper (MAF wire bail release and duct clips)
  • Lint-free microfiber towel (airbox tray degreasing & debris removal)
  • Silicone spray / rubber conditioner (optional, for airbox mounting grommets)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
On the Mercedes Benz CLK-Class (W208/W209 platform), the integrated engine cover/air cleaner housing locks directly onto the Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor neck via a brittle rear retaining bail clip and four rubber mounting grommets. DO NOT yank the cover upward by force. If you muscle it, you will snap the aging rear latch tabs or shear off the front valve cover mounting posts, resulting in a false-air vacuum leak and immediate P0171/P0174 lean codes. Unlatch the rear clip first and lift straight up with even, gentle pressure.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent the ECU from registering open-circuit sensor faults during disassembly.
  2. Remove the Front Engine Cover: Carefully pull straight up on the front decorative engine trim piece of your Mercedes Benz CLK-Class using your hands or a nylon panel popper to release it from its forward ball studs.
  3. Detach Intake Snorkels: Compress and disconnect the left and right flexible fabric intake ducts from the front radiator core support and the main airbox inlets. Inspect the accordion fabric for dry rot.
  4. Release the MAF Retaining Clip: Locate the metal or plastic spring bail clip securing the rear of the intake housing to the Mass Airflow Sensor elbow near the firewall. Gently pry the latch backward using a flathead screwdriver to release tension.
  5. Extract Air Cleaner Assembly: Lift the entire dual-channel air cleaner assembly straight up off the four engine valve cover mounting posts and remove it from the engine bay.
  6. Open the Filter Chambers: Place the housing on a clean workbench upside down. Using a T25 Torx driver, remove the perimeter screws securing the lower filter access plates and lift the old paper filters out.

Phase 2: Installing the Performance Air Filter

  1. Clean Housing & Inspect MAF Seal: Wipe clean the interior channels of the Mercedes Benz CLK-Class airbox using a lint-free microfiber towel to remove ingested sand and road debris. Inspect the green/black rubber MAF sealing ring on the engine elbow; ensure it is fully seated and tear-free.
  2. Drop in the Performance Filters: Seat the new high-flow performance air filters into each side of the air cleaner housing. Ensure the thick urethane perimeter gasket seats 100% flush inside the housing groove without pinching or folding.
  3. Fasten Access Covers: Reinstall the lower access plates and hand-thread the screws. Tighten snugly with your T25 Torx driver in a criss-cross pattern. Do not overtighten, or you will strip the plastic threads in the factory housing.
  4. Reinstall Airbox Assembly: Apply a light dab of silicone lubricant to the underside rubber grommets. Align the rear collar over the MAF housing, press firmly downward until the grommets pop onto the engine studs, and lock the rear retaining bail clip securely over the MAF neck.
  5. Reattach Ducts & Front Trim: Snap both intake snorkels back onto the airbox and radiator inlet ports. Realign the front silver-star engine beauty cover and press down firmly until the locking clips click.
  6. Reconnect Battery & Perform Throttle Trim: Reattach the negative battery terminal using your 10mm wrench. Turn the ignition key to Position II (ON, do not crank) for 30 seconds to allow the throttle actuator to recalibrate. Start the engine and do not touch the gas pedal for 20 seconds while the ECU trims idle air-fuel ratios to the increased airflow volume.
