Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
On the twin-turbo M278 (4.6L) and M157 (5.5L) engines, the factory front accordion intake ducts are notorious for becoming brittle from extreme underhood heat. Do not yank them. Release the locking tabs carefully using a nylon panel popper or a flathead screwdriver at the radiator core support before lifting the air cleaner housings. Also, the lower airbox screws thread directly into plastic—never use power tools to tighten them or you will strip the bosses clean out.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent ECU fault codes or triggering mass airflow implausibility flags during service.
  2. Uncouple the Front Air Ducts: Working on the 2013-2019 Mercedes Benz CL-Class CLS-Class GLE-Class SL-Class E-Class GL-Class SL-Class 4.6L 5.5L platform, locate the twin front fresh-air snorkel ducts. Use a nylon panel popper to gently release the front locking tabs at the radiator support, then slide the ducts backward toward the engine to free them from the inlet bezels.
  3. Release Engine Beauty Cover: Unclip the central front engine cover by lifting up firmly at the front corners to release the ball studs from the rubber grommets. Set it aside on a clean surface.
  4. Unscrew Air Filter Housings: Each cylinder bank (driver and passenger side) has its own dedicated airbox. Using a hand-operated T25 Torx driver, loosen the four captive perimeter Torx screws on each airbox lid. These screws are captive and do not need to be pulled completely out of the lid.
  5. Extract the OEM Filters: Lift each airbox cover straight up. Pull the factory pleated paper filters out of the lower assemblies. Inspect the dirty side of the lower box and vacuum out any leaves, road grit, or bugs using a shop vacuum before introducing new filters.

Phase 2: Installing the Performance Air Filter

  1. Inspect the Sealing Channel: Wipe down the perimeter mating surfaces inside both lower airbox assemblies using a clean microfiber towel. Ensure no loose debris enters the clean-air turbo inlet pipes.
  2. Seat the New Filters: Press each new Performance Air Filter firmly into the lower air cleaner box. Ensure the rubber perimeter gasket seats uniformly into the channel without binding or pinching. An improper seal allows unfiltered air directly into the turbos.
  3. Reinstall the Airbox Covers: Lower the airbox lids back over the performance filters. By hand, start all four T25 Torx screws on each lid to prevent cross-threading into the plastic housing. Snug them down in an alternating crisscross pattern using your T25 Torx driver until firmly seated (approx. 3-4 Nm / hand-tight; do NOT over-torque).
  4. Reattach Ducts and Engine Cover: Slide the flexible intake ducts back onto the forward inlet necks of both airboxes until the tabs latch securely. Realign the front engine beauty cover over its mounting posts and press down until the grommets click over the ball studs.
  5. Reconnect and Baseline Relearn: Reconnect the negative battery terminal using your 10mm wrench. Start the vehicle, but do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Allow the ECU to adapt its idle airflow trims to the higher flow rate of your newly installed performance intake filters without inducing false throttle sensor readings.
