Tools You Will Need
- 10mm Wrench or 10mm Socket (for the battery terminal)
- Plastic Panel Popper
- Zip Ties (High-quality, automotive grade)
- Flush-Cut Wire Snips
- Headlamp or Work Light
The biggest headache on this chassis is the brittle factory OBD2 port bracket. When data logging or running monitors, weekend warriors constantly kick the dongle with their knee, breaking the tabs. If you decide to unclip the factory port to tuck it completely behind the dash, do not force the plastic tabs. Gently massage them with a Plastic Panel Popper so they don’t snap off, leaving your diagnostic port dangling forever.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights or accidental shorts when working near dash wiring.
- Illuminate the Footwell: Strap on your Headlamp and locate the factory OBD2 port under the driver-side dash.
- Clear the Area: Use your Plastic Panel Popper to carefully remove any lower kick panel covers if your vehicle requires it to access the wiring harness behind the port.
- Release the OEM Port (Optional): If you are fully relocating the port to prevent knee-strikes, carefully depress the two side retaining clips with your Plastic Panel Popper and push the factory port up and out of its bracket.
Phase 2: Installing the OBD2 Extension Cable
- Connect the Extension: Take your new OBD2 Extension Cable and plug the male end firmly into the factory OBD2 port. Listen for the click. The pins inside handle sensitive CAN-bus and ECU data, so ensure it is seated straight and fully to avoid communication errors.
- Route the Ribbon Cable: Thread the extension cable up underneath the dashboard. You must route this strictly away from the steering column U-joint, the brake pedal arm, and the clutch pedal (if equipped).
- Anchor the Wiring: Secure the extension cable to a solid factory wiring harness using Zip Ties. Pull them tight so the cable cannot vibrate loose and drop onto your feet while driving.
- Trim the Excess: Use your Flush-Cut Wire Snips to cut the zip tie tails completely flush. Leaving sharp plastic tails is a rookie mistake that will slice your knuckles the next time you wrench under the dash.
- ECU Calibration: Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten it with your 10mm wrench. On the first startup, the vehicle gas pedal should not be touched for 20 seconds until the ECU adjusts to the restored power.
