High-Output Ignition Coils for GMC W3500 Forward (5.7L L31 / W-Series COE)

Engineered to replace degrading factory ignition components, these high-performance electronic ignition coils deliver increased spark energy to restore heavy-duty towing capacity and eliminate under-load misfires.

The Stock W3500 Thermal Degradation

The GMC W3500 cab-over configuration packages the 5.7L V8 in a highly constrained, low-airflow environment, subjecting ignition components to severe and continuous heat soak. Over thousands of commercial miles, the constant thermal cycling breaks down the factory coil's internal epoxy potting and primary copper windings. This thermal degradation leads to voltage leaks, weak spark delivery, and intermittent misfires, especially when the truck is hauling maximum payload or climbing steep grades. The result is a subtle hesitation, reduced throttle response, and ultimately, unburned fuel triggering efficiency losses and reduced fleet reliability.

The Engineering Solution

These bolt-on replacement coils are manufactured with high-dielectric epoxy resin and upgraded internal copper windings to combat harsh engine bay environments. The robust oval-connector housing and superior potting compound protect the delicate internal circuitry from the aggressive thermal shock found in the W3500 COE engine bay. By optimizing the primary-to-secondary winding ratio, these coils produce a substantially higher millijoule spark output. This hotter, longer-duration spark prevents spark blowout under heavy load, ensuring complete combustion across the RPM range. The result is a stabilized idle, restored low-end torque for moving heavy loads, and reliable long-haul operation.
