High Output Alternator for BMW 7 Series (1986-1987) 3.5L

High-Amp Direct-Fit Alternator for 1986-1987 BMW 7 Series E23

What it Does: The high output alternator replaces the factory charging unit on the 1986-1987 BMW 7 Series to supply up to 145 amps of continuous current, stabilizing system voltage under heavy electrical accessory loads.

The Stock BMW 7 Series Charging Limitations

The original factory Bosch alternator on the E23 chassis delivered between 65 and 90 amps, engineered solely for period-correct analog electronics. When these classic luxury platforms run auxiliary electric fans, modern high-draw stereo amplifiers, or advanced lighting, the factory unit suffers from severe idle voltage drop. Heat soak and prolonged low-RPM operation cause the stock stator windings to saturate, leading to dimming instrumentation, erratic idle control, and slow starter cranking due to undercharged lead-acid batteries.

The Engineering Solution

This 145-amp direct-fit charging unit features upgraded high-temp copper windings, heavy-duty rectifiers, and a solid-state internal regulator designed to maximize amperage at low engine speeds. Built around the classic AL49X platform, it integrates an external cooling fan and a precision-balanced single V-belt pulley to bolt straight to the M30B34 engine mounting ears without custom brackets. Every alternator is spin-tested and bench-verified to ensure consistent 14.2V–14.6V charging profiles under extreme thermal conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions & Fitment Warnings

Does this fit the E23 7 Series?

Yes, this is a direct fit for the 1986-1987 BMW 7 Series equipped with the M30B34 3.5L engine using the single V-belt configuration.

Do I need to upgrade my main charging wire?

For installations supporting maximum 145-amp draw, upgrading the primary B+ charge wire and engine block ground to 4-gauge cable is recommended to avoid resistance-induced voltage drops.

The BMW Precision Standard

Manufactured to strict tolerances, this charging system delivers steady electrical current to protect sensitive vintage Motronic ECUs and interior luxury components without throwing diagnostic errors or requiring chassis alterations.
