Precision-Engineered Shorty Exhaust Headers for 1964-1977 Ford Mustang, Falcon, Maverick (Windsor SBF)

What It Does: Replaces the restrictive, heavy cast-iron factory exhaust manifolds with high-flow stainless steel shorty headers to reduce backpressure and optimize exhaust gas scavenging across the power band.

The Stock Mustang, Falcon, Maverick Weakness

The original equipment manufacturer (OEM) cast-iron manifolds found on the Ford Windsor small-block engines are designed for mass production rather than performance. These units feature narrow, rough-cast internal passages and log-style geometry that create significant turbulence and backpressure. Over time, the uneven thermal expansion of cast iron leads to warping at the cylinder head mounting surface, resulting in persistent exhaust leaks. Furthermore, these factory manifolds suffer from extreme heat soak, which increases under-hood temperatures and limits the volumetric efficiency of the 260, 289, and 302 engines, effectively choking the engine's potential output.

The Engineering Solution

These shorty headers are engineered to resolve flow restrictions while maintaining a compact footprint for easy installation in tight engine bays. Constructed from high-grade stainless steel, they feature CNC-machined 7/16" head flanges and 3/8" outlet flanges to provide a thick, warp-resistant sealing surface that prevents leaks under high thermal stress. The 1 1/2" x 1 1/4" primary tubes are mandrel-bent to ensure consistent internal diameters, facilitating laminar flow and high exhaust gas velocity. By utilizing TIG and MIG welded construction, these headers offer superior structural integrity compared to stock components. This design significantly improves the scavenging effect—using the kinetic energy of exhaust pulses to help pull the next intake charge into the cylinder—which translates to crisper throttle response and increased torque.

The Ford Standard

Designed for the classic American muscle enthusiast, these headers deliver the aggressive V8 exhaust note and increased durability required for street or strip applications. The low-profile shorty design ensures maximum ground clearance and compatibility with most steering gear and suspension setups, providing a bolt-on performance upgrade that adheres to the rugged standards of the Ford Windsor engine family.
