High-Flow Mid-Length Exhaust Headers for 2003-2006 Mercedes Benz SL-Class (M113 / R230)

Designed for competition use, these mid-length exhaust headers replace restrictive factory manifolds to reduce exhaust gas backpressure and maximize volumetric efficiency.

The Stock SL-Class Exhaust Restriction

The OEM cast iron exhaust manifolds on the M113 5.0L V8 and supercharged AMG variants are engineered for mass production and noise suppression, rather than maximum flow. The factory cast log design suffers from severe flow disruption, creating localized heat zones and excessive exhaust backpressure. This high backpressure traps hot exhaust gases in the cylinder chamber during the overlap phase, severely limiting the engine's ability to pull in a fresh, dense intake charge. Over time, this exhaust restriction chokes top-end horsepower and torque, leaving significant mechanical performance on the table, especially in forced-induction or heavily modified naturally aspirated configurations.

The Engineering Solution

These mid-length headers utilize wider, high-flow primary tubes designed to dramatically reduce exhaust backpressure and optimize exhaust scavenging. By maintaining exhaust gas velocity while expanding overall volume capacity, the headers allow the M113 engine to breathe freely and operate at lower exhaust gas temperatures. A naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 typically yields a 7 to 10 percent gain in horsepower and torque, while supercharged AMG platforms can see gains up to 15 percent. The mid-length runner design optimizes mid-range torque without sacrificing high-rpm horsepower. Installation Notice: These header kits include downpipes but require custom fabrication. They must be welded to your existing exhaust system. Due to the universal tube routing, specific chassis constraints apply, such as tight clearances around the R230 transmission tunnel.
