Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The VK56DE engine is notorious on the Titan forums for having brittle factory accordion intake tubes that crack as they age, sucking in unmetered air and causing rough idles. When removing the old box, DO NOT poke or push the throttle body butterfly valve with your fingers or a rag. The Titan’s electronic throttle body is highly sensitive; moving the flap by hand will force a frustrating idle relearn procedure that requires a scan tool. Keep your fingers out of the throttle body, and be extremely gentle when handling the fragile Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor diode.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and force the ECU to reset for the 2004-2015 Nissan Titan 5.6L new airflow parameters.
  2. Remove the Engine Cover: Use your 10mm socket to remove the bolts holding the plastic engine cover in place. Lift the cover off and set it aside so you have clear, unobstructed access to the throttle body.
  3. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the MAF sensor on the factory airbox tube. Depress the grey locking tab and carefully slide the harness plug off. Use a panel popper to unclip the wire harness from the plastic airbox so the wire is completely free and won’t get yanked during removal.
  4. Disconnect the Breather Hose: Use needle-nose pliers to squeeze the tension clamp on the crankcase breather hose (attached to the factory intake tube) and slide it backward. Gently twist and pull the hose off the plastic tube nipple.
  5. Remove the Factory Intake: Loosen the hose clamp at the throttle body and the clamp at the airbox using an 8mm nut driver. Use a 10mm socket to remove the mounting bolt securing the lower airbox to the fender well. Firmly pull the entire factory airbox and tube assembly straight up to dislodge it from the rubber mounting grommets, then pull it out of the engine bay.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Nissan Titan (2004-2015) 5.6L Engine - Black

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Using a Phillips head screwdriver, carefully remove the two screws holding the factory MAF sensor into the OEM airbox. Gently pull the sensor straight out to avoid scraping the exposed diode. Transfer it immediately into the machined housing on your new black aluminum intake tube and secure it using the supplied aftermarket hardware. Do not over-tighten, or you will strip the threads or crack the plastic flange.
  2. Install the Heat Shield: Drop the new aftermarket heat shield assembly into the factory lower airbox location, making sure the mounting pegs seat into the factory rubber grommets. Secure it to the fender chassis using a 10mm socket and the provided hardware.
  3. Mount the Intake Tube: Slide the provided silicone couplers onto the throttle body and the new intake tube. Drop the tube into position. Snug down the stainless band clamps using your 8mm nut driver, ensuring the tube sits flush and doesn’t bind or vibrate against the fan shroud.
  4. Connect the Filter and Breather: Attach the high-flow conical air filter to the end of the tube inside the heat shield and tighten the clamp with an 8mm nut driver. Push the factory crankcase breather hose onto the welded nipple on the new tube, securing it with the factory spring clamp using needle-nose pliers. Plug the MAF sensor harness back in until it clicks.
  5. Start-Up Protocol: Double-check all clamps, then reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. Start the truck, but DO NOT touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. The ECU needs this undisturbed idle time on the first startup to calibrate the electronic throttle body and adjust the fuel trims to the increased air volume.
