Tired of your Sunfire or Cavalier feeling sluggish, especially during acceleration? Uncork the hidden power of your 2.3L or 2.4L engine and rediscover the joy of driving with a performance boost you can feel.
Performance Cold Air Intake Kit for Pontiac Sunfire SE / GT & Chevrolet Cavalier Z24 (2.3L / 2.4L 4 Cylinder)
The factory air intake system in your 1995-2002 Pontiac Sunfire or Chevrolet Cavalier, particularly with the 2.3L Quad 4 or 2.4L Twin Cam engine, is designed for quiet operation and cost-efficiency, not peak performance. This restrictive setup, often consisting of convoluted plastic tubing and a paper filter, chokes your engine’s ability to breathe freely, limiting horsepower, torque, and throttle response.
Our high-flow Cold Air Intake Kit is engineered to directly replace this restrictive OEM system. By providing a smooth, wide-diameter pathway for air and utilizing a high-efficiency washable filter, this kit dramatically increases the volume of cooler, denser air reaching your engine. The result is a noticeable surge in power, crisper throttle response, and a deeper, more aggressive engine sound that will transform your driving experience.
Why You Need This Upgrade
- Unleash Hidden Horsepower & Torque: Boost your engine’s output by up to 10% by allowing it to inhale more cold, oxygen-rich air for more efficient combustion.
- Sharper Throttle Response & Acceleration: Eliminate the restriction of the stock airbox and tube, providing instant access to power and a more responsive, engaging drive.
- Enhanced Engine Sound & Appearance: Enjoy a deeper, sportier growl from your 2.3L or 2.4L engine, while the polished T304 aluminum piping adds a high-performance look under the hood.
- Lifetime Filtration & Savings: The washable and reusable high-flow air filter requires cleaning only every 50,000 miles under normal conditions, saving you money on disposable filters.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic hand tools, but wrestling the bulky factory J-Body resonator out of the fender well takes a little patience.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm Socket & Ratchet (For the battery terminal and factory airbox mounting bolts)
- 8mm Nut Driver or Deep Socket (For removing and tightening hose clamps)
- Flathead Screwdriver & Panel Popper (For releasing brittle plastic retaining clips)
- Silicone Spray or Soapy Water (Crucial for safely transferring the factory sensor)
The J-Body community knows the factory Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor grommet gets rock-hard from years of underhood heat. If you pull the sensor dry on this 1995-2002 Pontiac Sunfire 2.3L 2.4L, you will snap the delicate plastic probe off inside the tube. Spray a shot of silicone lubricant around the base of the sensor, let it sit for two minutes, and twist it out gently.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights on your 1995-2002 Pontiac Sunfire 2.3L 2.4L.
- Unplug the IAT Sensor: Locate the Intake Air Temperature sensor on the factory air tube. Depress the locking tab on the harness and pull the connector free. Do not yank on the wires.
- Loosen the Throttle Body Clamp: Use your 8mm nut driver to loosen the factory hose clamp securing the intake tube to the LD9/Quad 4 throttle body.
- Remove the Factory Airbox: Grab your 10mm socket and remove the mounting bolts holding the upper airbox to the chassis. Carefully disconnect the factory PCV breather hose—the 20-year-old plastic will be brittle.
- Wrestle Out the Resonator: This is the classic J-Body headache. Pull the lower resonator box entirely out from the fender well area. You may need a panel popper to free any stubborn plastic zip-tie trees holding the loom to the box. Once removed, set the factory airbox on your bench to extract the IAT sensor.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Pontiac Sunfire SE GT (1995-2002) 2.3L 2.4L Engine - Blue
- Mount the Silicone Coupler: Slide the provided silicone reducer/coupler onto the throttle body. Slip two hose clamps over it and lightly snug the throttle body side using your 8mm socket so it doesn’t fall off.
- Transfer the IAT Sensor: Take the factory IAT sensor you saved and lubricate the O-ring with soapy water. Gently push and twist it into the pre-drilled rubber grommet on your new blue intake pipe until it seats flush. Do not force it.
- Route the New Intake Pipe: Carefully feed the blue intake tube down into the fender well void where the restrictive factory resonator used to live. Slide the top end into the throttle body coupler. Do not tighten the clamps fully yet to allow for adjustment.
- Install the Breather Hose & Filter: Connect the supplied PCV breather hose from the engine valve cover to the welded nipple on the intake tube. Next, attach the blue high-flow cone filter to the bottom of the tube inside the fender area and lock it down tightly with an 8mm nut driver.
- Align, Tighten, and Relearn: Rotate the pipe so it isn’t rubbing on any metal chassis edges or brake lines. Once positioned correctly, tighten all hose clamps firmly. Plug the IAT sensor harness back in until it clicks. Reconnect your negative battery terminal with the 10mm wrench. On the very first startup, do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds; let the vehicle idle so the ECU can adjust to the new volume of cold air.
