Is your Grand Am feeling sluggish off the line, or simply not responding with the enthusiasm it once had? A restrictive stock air intake chokes your engine’s potential, but a simple upgrade can unleash noticeable power and a satisfying growl.
Performance Cold Air Intake Kit for Pontiac Grand AM SE / GT (2.4L 4 Cylinder)
The factory airbox in your 1995-2002 Pontiac Grand Am SE or GT, especially with the 2.4L 4-cylinder engine, is designed for quiet operation and cost-effectiveness, not peak performance. This restrictive design limits airflow, hindering your engine’s ability to breathe freely and produce its maximum power output and throttle response.
Our Cold Air Intake Kit directly addresses this limitation by replacing the bottlenecking stock air filter and intake tube with a high-flow, T304 lightweight aluminum piping and an engineered cone filter. This allows your 2.4L “Quad 4” engine to pull in a greater volume of colder, denser air, optimizing combustion for improved horsepower, torque, and a more aggressive engine note.
Why You Need This Upgrade
- Instant Power & Torque Gains: Boost horsepower and torque by up to 10% by providing your engine with unrestricted, cooler air flow.
- Sharper Throttle Response: Eliminate hesitation and experience a more immediate and linear power delivery, making your Grand Am feel more agile.
- Enhanced Engine Sound: Enjoy a deeper, sportier, and more aggressive intake sound that truly reflects your engine’s unleashed potential.
- Superior Filtration & Longevity: Engineered for exceptional filtration, the washable and reusable filter only requires cleaning every 50,000 miles under normal driving conditions, saving you money on replacements.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic hand tools are all you need, but you will be fighting some stubborn 20-year-old N-Body plastic clips in the wheel well.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm wrench or socket (for the battery terminal)
- 8mm socket & ratchet (for hose clamps)
- 13mm socket (for factory airbox mounting bolts)
- Plastic panel popper tool (critical for the fender liner splash guard)
- Silicone spray or soapy water (for seating the new intake couplers)
The LD9 Twin Cam engine is notorious for brittle sensor wiring. When removing the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor from your factory air tube, do NOT pull it by the wires. Gently wiggle the plastic sensor body. Furthermore, the 1995-2002 Pontiac Grand Am 2.4L has a restrictive lower resonator box hidden inside the driver’s side fender. You will need to pop the fender liner clips to yank that dead weight out. Don’t skip this step, or your new cold air intake won’t fit properly!
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 1995-2002 Pontiac Grand Am 2.4L
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and protect the ECU.
- Unplug the IAT Sensor: Locate the Intake Air Temperature sensor on the factory intake tube. Carefully depress the retaining clip and disconnect the harness. Set the wire aside where it won’t get crushed.
- Loosen the Throttle Body Clamp: Take your 8mm socket and loosen the factory worm-gear clamp securing the rubber intake hose to the throttle body.
- Extract the Upper Airbox: Remove the 13mm bolts holding the main airbox assembly to the chassis. Lift the upper airbox and the corrugated tube out of the engine bay as one unit.
- Gut the Fender Resonator: Turn your steering wheel all the way to the right. Use your panel popper tool to remove the plastic push-clips holding the driver’s side inner fender liner. Pull the liner back and wrestle the factory lower resonator box out of the fender cavity.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Pontiac Grand AM SE GT (1995-2002) 2.4L - Blue
- Mount the Silicone Coupler: Slide the provided silicone reducer onto your throttle body. Slip two hose clamps over it, but only tighten the throttle body side using your 8mm socket. Leave the intake side loose.
- Transfer the IAT Sensor: Carefully pull the factory IAT sensor out of the OEM tube. Apply a tiny drop of silicone spray to the O-ring, and firmly press it into the pre-drilled grommet on your new blue intake pipe.
- Route the New Intake Pipe: Carefully snake the blue cold air intake pipe down into the engine bay, guiding the lower end into the freshly emptied fender well area. Slide the top end into the silicone coupler and snug down the 8mm hose clamp.
- Install the Cone Filter: Reach up from underneath (or through the fender liner) and slide the high-flow cone filter onto the bottom of the intake pipe. Secure it tightly using your 8mm socket, then pop your fender liner clips back into place.
- Reconnect and Relearn: Plug the IAT sensor harness back in. Reconnect your negative battery terminal with a 10mm wrench. Start the engine, but do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds so the ECU can adjust to the new airflow volumes. Check the clamps for vacuum leaks.
