Feeling your Xterra’s throttle response lag on the trail or highway? Unleash the full potential of your 4.0L V6 with an upgrade that delivers instant power and a robust engine roar.

Performance Cold Air Intake Kit for Nissan Xterra (4.0L V6)

The factory air intake system on your Nissan Xterra’s 4.0L V6 is engineered for quiet operation and cost-efficiency, not maximum performance. This often means restrictive bends, corrugated tubing, and an undersized airbox that choke your engine’s ability to breathe, limiting its potential horsepower and torque output.

Our performance cold air intake kit replaces these restrictive OEM components with a high-flow, smooth-bore T304 lightweight aluminum induction pipe and a large, washable performance air filter. Coupled with an integrated heat shield, this system isolates the filter from engine bay heat, ensuring a consistent supply of dense, cool air for optimal combustion and a significant boost in power and throttle response.

Why You Need This Upgrade

  • Output Gain: Boosts horsepower and torque by up to 10% for a noticeable increase in performance.
  • Premium Construction: Made with T304 lightweight aluminum piping for durability and heat management.
  • Heat Shield Protection: Includes a dedicated heat shield to block engine heat and maintain a cool air supply.
  • Open Induction: Replaces narrow factory parts with a high-flow pathway to satisfy the engine’s demand for air.
  • Better Throttle Response: Removes the slow feeling of the stock intake for faster acceleration when you step on the gas.
  • Fuel Efficiency: Balances air-to-fuel ratios for a more effective burn and better fuel use.
  • Sporty Sound: Enhances the vehicle’s sound with a deeper intake growl during acceleration.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic bolt-on, but requires delicate care around the VQ40’s MAF sensor and brittle factory plastics.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm socket and ratchet
  • 8mm nut driver (or flathead screwdriver)
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • 4mm Allen wrench (for aftermarket MAF hardware)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
When wrestling the factory air box out of your N50 chassis, pay close attention to the plastic crankcase breather hose. After years of heat cycling on the VQ40DE, that plastic connector becomes incredibly brittle and will snap if you force it. Additionally, the VQ40 is notoriously picky about Mass Airflow (MAF) readings. Do not drop the sensor, and absolutely do not touch the delicate amber bulb inside it, or you’ll be chasing a P0101 check engine code all weekend.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 2005-2015 Nissan Xterra 4.0L

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Depress the locking tab and unplug the wiring harness. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the two factory screws securing the sensor. Carefully pull it straight out and place it somewhere safe.
  3. Loosen the Intake Clamps: Grab your 8mm nut driver and loosen the hose clamps at the throttle body and the factory airbox lid.
  4. Detach the Breather Hose: Use your pliers to pinch the spring clamp on the crankcase breather hose. Slide the clamp back, then gently twist and pull the hose off the factory intake tube. Do not yank it.
  5. Remove the Factory Airbox: Unbolt the single mounting bolt on the fender side using your 10mm socket. Unlatch the airbox lid clips, detach the intake tube, and lift the entire upper assembly out of the engine bay.

Phase 2: Installing the Red Cold Air Intake Kit

  1. Assemble and Mount the Heat Shield: Press the supplied rubber weatherstripping around the edges of your new heat shield. Drop the shield into the factory mounting position and secure it using the OEM hardware and your 10mm socket.
  2. Install the Throttle Body Coupler: Slide the provided silicone coupler onto the engine’s throttle body. Secure the throttle body side by tightening the hose clamp with your 8mm nut driver, but leave the intake-side clamp loose for now.
  3. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Gently slide your factory MAF sensor into the machined port on the new Red intake tube. Secure it using the supplied aftermarket bolts and a 4mm Allen wrench. Tighten them down snugly, but do not overtighten and strip the aluminum threads.
  4. Install the New Intake Tube: Thread the new intake tube through the heat shield opening and push it into the throttle body coupler. Reconnect the crankcase breather hose using your pliers. Once everything is aligned, lock down the remaining clamps with your 8mm nut driver, then secure the red high-flow cone filter to the end of the tube.
  5. Reconnect and Relearn: Plug the MAF sensor harness back in until it clicks. Reconnect the negative battery terminal using your 10mm wrench. On the very first startup, fire up the engine but do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. The VQ40 ECU needs this idle time to adjust to the massive increase in airflow volume without stalling.
