Feel the immediate difference in power and responsiveness as your Xterra breathes freely. Say goodbye to sluggish acceleration and unlock the true potential of your 4.0L V6 engine.

Performance Cold Air Intake Kit for Nissan Xterra (2005-2015) with 4.0L V6 VQ40DE Engine Black

The factory intake system on your Nissan Xterra 4.0L V6 is designed with noise reduction in mind, often at the expense of performance. Its convoluted tubing and restrictive airbox choke your engine, limiting the amount of vital cool air it can ingest, which directly hinders horsepower and torque.

This performance cold air intake kit directly addresses these limitations, replacing the bottlenecks with a smooth, wide-diameter T304 lightweight aluminum pathway and a high-flow, reusable filter. The integrated heat shield ensures only cool, dense air reaches your engine, maximizing combustion efficiency and power output across the entire RPM range, whether you’re on the highway or hitting the trails.

Why You Need This Upgrade

  • Unleash Hidden Power: Boosts your Nissan Xterra’s horsepower and torque by up to 10% for a noticeable increase in performance and responsiveness.
  • Durable T304 Aluminum: Crafted from lightweight T304 aluminum piping, ensuring long-lasting durability and superior heat management for consistent performance.
  • Cooler, Denser Air: Includes a dedicated heat shield to effectively block restrictive engine bay heat, maintaining a cool, dense air supply for optimal combustion.
  • Maximized Airflow: Replaces narrow, factory intake parts with a high-flow, open induction pathway, satisfying your VQ40DE engine’s demand for air.
  • Instant Throttle Response: Eliminates the sluggish feeling of the stock intake, providing faster acceleration and immediate power delivery when you hit the gas.
  • Optimized Fuel Economy: Balances air-to-fuel ratios for a more effective burn, potentially leading to improved fuel use during daily driving.
  • Aggressive Engine Sound: Enhances your Xterra’s driving experience with a deeper, more assertive intake growl during acceleration, letting your engine’s true voice be heard.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - A straightforward bolt-on for the 2005-2015 Nissan Xterra 4.0L, but requires extreme care when handling the delicate factory MAF sensor and aging plastic PCV fittings on the VQ40DE engine.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm socket and ratchet (for battery terminal and airbox bolts)
  • 8mm socket or 5/16" nut driver (for intake band clamps)
  • Phillips head screwdriver (for factory MAF sensor removal)
  • 4mm Allen wrench (for aftermarket MAF sensor bolts)
  • Pliers (for the factory PCV breather hose spring clamp)
  • Panel popper or flathead screwdriver (for plastic retaining clips)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The N50 platform Xterras are notorious for brittle engine bay plastics. When removing the factory PCV breather hose from the stock intake tube, do not yank it. The plastic nipple on the valve cover side gets baked by years of VQ40DE heat cycles and will snap off in your hand, turning a 45-minute job into a valve cover replacement nightmare. Twist the hose gently to break the seal before pulling. Furthermore, the factory Helmholtz resonators (the clunky plastic boxes hanging off the stock intake) are often cracked, so pull the whole assembly out carefully.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 2005-2015 Nissan Xterra 4.0L

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench or 10mm socket. This prevents accidental short circuits and resets the ECU fuel trims to prepare for the new intake.
  2. Isolate the MAF Sensor: Unplug the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor wiring harness. Using your Phillips head screwdriver, remove the two screws holding the sensor into the factory housing. Gently pull the sensor straight out. Treat this sensor like a glass grenade. Place it in a clean, dry, and safe spot on your workbench.
  3. Disconnect the PCV Breather: Grab your pliers and squeeze the spring clamp on the PCV crankcase breather hose attached to the factory intake tube. Slide the clamp back, then carefully twist and pull the hose free from the intake.
  4. Loosen the Clamps: Use your 8mm socket to loosen the factory hose clamps at the throttle body and at the airbox housing.
  5. Evict the Factory Airbox: Using a 10mm socket and a ratchet extension, unbolt the factory lower airbox housing from the inner fender. Pull the entire factory intake tube, Helmholtz resonators, and airbox out of the engine bay as one unified piece. Use your panel popper to release any wire loom clips attached to the factory box.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake Kit for Nissan Xterra (2005-2015) with 4.0L V6 Engine Black

  1. Assemble the Heat Shield: Drop the new aftermarket heat shield into the space where the factory lower airbox used to live. Secure it to the factory mounting points using the provided hardware and your 10mm socket. Install the provided rubber edge trim around the shield to seal it against the hood.
  2. Mount the Couplers: Slide the provided silicone step-coupler onto the VQ40DE throttle body. Slide the new black intake tube into place. Loosely install the provided stainless steel band clamps with your 8mm socket or 5/16" nut driver. Do not lock them down yet; leave them loose enough to allow for final alignment.
  3. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Carefully push the factory MAF sensor into the machined port on the new intake tube. Make sure the O-ring seats flush. Secure it using the supplied aftermarket hardware (usually requiring a 4mm Allen wrench). Do not overtighten these screws, or you will strip the threads out of the new tube. Reconnect the factory MAF wiring harness.
  4. Connect the Hoses and Filter: Attach the supplied high-flow air filter to the end of the intake tube inside the heat shield and tighten the clamp. Route the new PCV breather hose from the valve cover port to the welded fitting on the new intake tube and secure it.
  5. Lock It Down and Initialize: Verify that the new intake tube isn’t rubbing against the AC lines, radiator hoses, or serpentine belt. Once aligned perfectly, torque down all band clamps with your 8mm socket. Reconnect the negative battery terminal. CRITICAL: On the first startup, the vehicle gas pedal should not be touched for at least 20 seconds. Let the engine idle so the ECU can adapt its fuel trims to the massive increase in airflow.
