Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
Veteran VQ40DE owners know the factory rubber intake tract is notorious for tearing near the throttle body, causing unmetered air leaks. But during this install, your biggest enemy is the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. The factory screws strip easily, and the sensor element itself is incredibly fragile. Do NOT touch the sensor wire with your bare hands, or you’ll be buying a $150 replacement. Also, watch out for the hidden 10mm bolt securing the factory resonator down inside the fender well.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights on your 2005-2012 Nissan Pathfinder 4.0L.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the MAF sensor on the factory airbox tube. Depress the plastic tab and pull the harness straight back. Do not yank the wires. Tuck it safely out of the way.

Phase 2: Installing the Red Cold Air Intake Kit

Secure it using the provided Allen bolts and a 3mm or 4mm Allen wrench. Snug them down, but do not overtighten and crack the plastic flange!
  2. Install the Throttle Body Coupler: Slide the silicone step-down coupler onto the VQ40 throttle body. Secure the throttle body side by tightening the provided T-bolt or worm clamp with your 8mm socket.
  3. Mount the Heat Shield: Drop the new heat shield into the R51 chassis factory airbox location. Bolt it down into the OEM mounting holes using your 10mm socket. Make sure the rubber edge trim is pressed firmly into place to seal against the hood.
  4. Position the Intake Tube and Filter: Slide the red intake pipe into the throttle body coupler. Attach the new high-flow cone filter to the end inside the heat shield. Route the provided PCV silicone breather hose from the engine valve cover to the welded nipple on the new intake pipe. Tighten all remaining hose clamps.
  5. Reconnect and Relearn: Plug the MAF sensor harness back in until it clicks. Reconnect your negative battery terminal with a 10mm wrench. On the first startup, do not touch the gas pedal for 20 seconds; let the ECU adjust to the massive increase in airflow volume at idle.
