Tired of your Nissan Pathfinder feeling sluggish off the line? Transform your SUV’s responsiveness and power with an upgrade that finally lets your engine breathe.

Performance Cold Air Intake Kit for Nissan Pathfinder (2005-2012) 4.0L V6

The factory air box and intake tube in your 2005-2012 Nissan Pathfinder’s 4.0L V6 engine were designed with compromise in mind, often prioritizing quiet operation over peak performance. This restrictive design limits the crucial airflow your VQ40DE needs, choking potential horsepower, torque, and throttle response, especially during heavy towing, off-road adventures, or spirited highway driving.

This high-performance cold air intake system specifically addresses these limitations by replacing the entire restrictive stock setup. Featuring a high-velocity induction pipe and a dedicated heat shield, it effectively isolates the filter from engine bay heat, ensuring that a larger volume of cooler, denser air is delivered directly to your engine. The result is a more efficient combustion process, unlocking significant gains in power, acceleration, and a noticeably more aggressive engine note.

Why You Need This Upgrade

  • Horsepower & Torque Boost: Experience a noticeable increase in both horsepower and torque, providing more power for daily driving, towing, and tackling challenging terrain.
  • Cooler, Denser Air: The included heat shield effectively blocks radiant engine heat, ensuring the air entering your engine remains cool and oxygen-rich for optimal performance.
  • Unrestricted Airflow: Replaces narrow, convoluted factory components with a smooth, high-flow pathway, satisfying your engine’s demand for maximum air induction.
  • Immediate Acceleration: Eliminates the “dead spot” and lag associated with the stock intake, delivering sharper, more responsive throttle feel the moment you press the pedal.
  • Enhanced Engine Sound: Enjoy a deeper, more aggressive growl from your 4.0L V6 under acceleration, adding a sporty character to your Pathfinder.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic hand tools required. The only real challenge is handling the sensitive factory electronics with care.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm wrench and 10mm deep socket with ratchet
  • 8mm socket (or 5/16" socket for aftermarket clamps)
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Panel popper tool
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The VQ40DE engine in the R51 chassis is notorious for two major headaches during this job. First, the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor is highly sensitive; touching the wire element will instantly trigger a P0101 check engine light. Second, while the intake tube is removed, absolutely NEVER push the throttle body butterfly valve open by hand to clean or inspect it. If you move that flap manually, you will lose the factory calibration and be forced to perform the dreaded Nissan Idle Air Volume Learning procedure. Keep your fingers out of the throttle body.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and safeguard the ECU on your 2005-2012 Nissan Pathfinder 4.0L.
  2. Remove the Engine Cover: Use a 10mm socket to remove the bolts securing the plastic acoustic cover to the top of the engine. Pull straight up firmly to pop it off the rear rubber mounting grommets.
  3. Unplug and Remove the MAF Sensor: Depress the locking tab on the MAF sensor wiring harness and slide the plug off. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the two factory screws holding the sensor into the tube. Gently pull the sensor straight out and place it inside a clean plastic bag away from your work area.
  4. Disconnect the PCV Breather Hose: Locate the crankcase breather hose attached to the side of the factory intake tube. Use pliers to squeeze the tension clamp, slide it backward, and pull the rubber hose off the plastic nipple. Note: These get brittle from heat cycling, so pull gently to avoid tearing the hose.
  5. Remove the Factory Intake Assembly: Grab your 8mm socket and loosen the hose clamps at the throttle body and at the airbox connection. Pull the corrugated tube free. Next, use a 10mm socket to remove the bolt holding the lower airbox housing to the inner fender well. Use a panel popper tool to safely unclip the MAF wiring harness from the side of the box, then pull the entire factory airbox assembly out of the engine bay.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake Kit for Nissan Pathfinder (2005-2012) with 4.0L V6 Engine Black

  1. Assemble and Mount the Heat Shield: Assemble the aftermarket heat shield using the supplied hardware and weather stripping. Drop it into the factory airbox location and bolt it into the original factory mounting holes using your 10mm socket.
  2. Mount the Silicone Coupler: Slide the provided silicone step-coupler over the throttle body. Slide the new hose clamps onto both ends but leave them loose. Use an 8mm socket or a 5/16" socket to lightly snug the clamp on the throttle body side so it doesn’t fall off.
  3. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Carefully retrieve your factory MAF sensor and slide it into the billet adapter pad on the new intake tube. Ensure the sensor is facing the correct direction (airflow arrows pointing toward the engine). Secure it using the supplied Allen bolts and a hex key. Do not over-tighten, or you’ll crack the plastic mounting flange.
  4. Route the Tube and Breather Hose: Guide the new black intake tube into the heat shield compartment and slide the top end into the throttle body coupler. Take the supplied PCV breather hose and connect it from the engine valve cover port to the welded fitting on your new intake tube, securing it with pliers or the provided gear clamps.
  5. Install the Filter and Lock It Down: Slide the high-flow cone filter onto the end of the tube inside the heat shield area. Go back through the entire system with your 8mm socket or 5/16" socket and fully tighten every hose clamp from the throttle body down to the filter. Reconnect the MAF sensor wiring harness until it clicks.
  6. The First Startup Protocol: Reconnect the negative battery terminal using your 10mm wrench. Turn the key to start the vehicle, but absolutely do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Let the engine idle on its own so the ECU can adapt to the newly increased airflow volume without stumbling.
