Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The VQ40DE engine in your Frontier is notorious for the dreaded "pedal dance" idle relearn nightmare. While the intake tube is removed, NEVER push the throttle body butterfly valve open with your fingers to clean it, and NEVER unplug the throttle body harness. If you move that flap manually, you will trigger a permanent high-idle condition that requires a frustrating, split-second sequence of pedal presses to reset the ECU. Also, the factory MAF sensor screws are softer than warm butter. Use firm, direct downward pressure with a fresh #2 Phillips screwdriver so you don’t strip the heads.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights on your 2005-2012 Nissan Frontier 4.0L. Do not skip this step.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor on the top of the factory plastic intake tube. Depress the plastic tab on the connector and gently slide it off. Tuck the wiring harness out of the way.
  3. Remove the PCV Breather Hose: Locate the rubber breather hose attached to the side of the factory intake. Squeeze the factory spring clamp with your pliers, slide it back down the hose, and pull the rubber hose off the plastic intake nipple.
  4. Loosen the Hose Clamps: Using an 8mm socket, loosen the hose clamp securing the intake tube to the throttle body, and the clamp securing the tube to the factory airbox. Wiggle the brittle factory plastic tube free and remove it.
  5. Extract the Factory Airbox: Unclip the upper airbox lid and remove the factory paper filter. Use a 10mm socket with a short extension to remove the mounting bolt holding the lower airbox assembly to the inner fender well. Pull the entire factory box straight up to pop it out of its rubber grommets.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake Kit for Nissan Frontier (2005-2012) with 4.0L V6 Engine Red

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Carefully remove the two factory screws holding the MAF sensor into the old tube using your #2 Phillips screwdriver. Gently pull the MAF out—do not touch the delicate internal amber bulb or wires! Insert the sensor into the new Red Cold Air Intake tube and secure it using the provided aftermarket hardware and a 4mm Allen wrench.
  2. Install the Silicone Coupler: Slide the provided silicone coupler over the factory throttle body. Slide two of the provided hose clamps loosely over the coupler. Tighten the clamp on the throttle body side down snugly using your 8mm socket.
  3. Mount the New Intake Tube: Maneuver your new Cold Air Intake tube into the engine bay. Seat the lower end into the provided heat shield (if assembling) and slide the upper end into the silicone throttle body coupler. Once aligned properly, lock down the remaining clamp with your 8mm socket.
  4. Reconnect the PCV Hose and Air Filter: Push the factory rubber PCV breather hose onto the welded metal nipple on your new intake tube. Secure it by sliding the factory spring clamp back into place with pliers. Slide the new conical high-flow air filter onto the end of the intake tube and tighten its clamp with an 8mm socket.
  5. Reconnect Electronics and Relearn: Plug the MAF sensor harness back in until you hear an audible click. Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten it with your 10mm wrench. Turn the key to the ON position, then start the engine. Do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Let the truck idle so the VQ40 ECU can automatically adapt to the increased airflow parameters.
