Unleash up to 10% more horsepower from your Frontier's 4.0L V6 with this performance cold air intake system—engineered to deliver cooler, denser air for aggressive throttle response and better fuel efficiency.

Turn Your Frontier Into the Powerhouse It Was Meant to Be

The Nissan Frontier has earned its reputation as a mid-size workhorse that refuses to quit—whether you're hauling gear to the jobsite, exploring remote trails, or merging onto the highway with a loaded bed. But the factory intake system? It's holding your 4.0L V6 back. Designed for quiet operation rather than maximum performance, the stock airbox chokes your engine with restrictive tubing and heat-soaked air. This performance cold air intake system tears down those barriers and gives your Frontier the breathing room it deserves.

Built specifically for 2005–2019 Frontier owners who demand more from their V6, this kit replaces the entire restrictive factory setup with a high-flow aluminum induction pathway and integrated heat shield. The result? Your engine pulls in a larger volume of cool, oxygen-rich air—the kind that ignites more efficiently and delivers real, seat-of-the-pants power gains you'll feel every time you hit the throttle.

Key Features at a Glance

  • 8-10% Horsepower & Torque Gains: Transform your Frontier's output from approximately 261 HP to 283-287 HP, with torque climbing from 281 lb-ft to 304-309 lb-ft—perfect for towing, passing, and aggressive off-road climbs.
  • T304 Aluminum Construction: Lightweight yet incredibly durable piping resists corrosion and manages heat better than factory plastic, ensuring long-term reliability in harsh conditions.
  • Integrated Heat Shield: Blocks radiant engine heat to maintain a consistent supply of cool, dense air—critical for maximizing combustion efficiency and protecting power gains.
  • High-Flow Open Element Design: Ditches the cramped factory airbox for an unrestricted pathway that feeds your engine exactly what it craves—more air, faster.
  • Instant Throttle Response: Eliminates the sluggish "lag" feeling of the stock intake, delivering crisp acceleration the moment your foot touches the pedal.
  • Washable & Reusable Filter: High-performance oiled cotton filter captures dirt and debris while flowing maximum air—simply clean and re-oil for years of use.
  • Aggressive Intake Growl: Adds a deep, throaty induction sound during acceleration that reminds you this isn't your average Frontier.

How It's Used: Installation & Fitment

This is a true bolt-on upgrade designed for the DIY enthusiast. Using factory mounting points and included hardware, most Frontier owners can complete installation in under 90 minutes with basic hand tools. No cutting, drilling, or permanent modifications required—just remove the stock intake components and bolt in the new system. The kit includes pre-formed aluminum tubing, silicone couplers, stainless steel clamps, and a detailed heat shield that mounts securely to protect against engine bay temperatures.

Product Durability & Material Details

Constructed from T304 lightweight aluminum, this intake system is built to handle everything the Frontier lifestyle throws at it—vibration from rough trails, extreme temperature swings, and exposure to mud, dust, and moisture. The aluminum piping is polished for corrosion resistance and heat dissipation, while the integrated heat shield uses reflective barrier technology to keep intake air temperatures low even during extended highway runs or stop-and-go traffic. The washable filter element is designed for long-term durability and can be cleaned and re-oiled multiple times without losing filtration efficiency.

Your Benefits at a Glance
  • Real-World Power You Can Feel: 8-10% horsepower and torque gains translate to quicker acceleration, easier highway merging, and improved towing capability.
  • Better Fuel Efficiency: Optimized air-to-fuel ratios mean your engine burns fuel more completely, potentially improving MPG during highway cruising.
  • Protects Resale Value: Easily reversible to stock configuration if needed, with no permanent vehicle modifications.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic hand tools required, but you’ll need patience when dealing with the sensitive VQ40DE electronics and old, heat-cycled plastics.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet (For battery terminals and factory airbox bolts)
  • 8mm socket or 5/16" nut driver (For factory and aftermarket hose clamps)
  • #2 Phillips screwdriver (For transferring the MAF sensor)
  • Needle-nose pliers (For removing the factory PCV breather spring clamps)
  • Panel popper tool (To safely unclip the MAF wiring harness from the airbox)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
If you spend time on the D40 forums, you know the VQ40DE engine produces massive under-hood heat. Because of this, the factory PCV breather hose connected to your stock intake tube will be baked on solid. Do not yank it. Pulling too hard will snap the brittle plastic nipple right off the valve cover. Use a pick tool to gently break the rubber seal, or simply slice the old hose with a razor blade if your new kit includes a replacement. Also, the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor is incredibly sensitive—never touch the exposed wire element when transferring it!

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and protect the ECU on your 2005-2012 Nissan Frontier 4.0L.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the MAF sensor on the factory airbox lid. Gently press the release tab and pull the connector off. Use a panel popper tool to detach the plastic harness clip securing the wire to the airbox housing. Push the harness out of the way.
  3. Disconnect the PCV Breather Hose: Locate the breather hose attached to the side of the factory intake tube. Squeeze the spring clamp with your needle-nose pliers and slide it down the hose. Carefully twist and pull the hose off the plastic intake nipple.
  4. Loosen the Factory Hose Clamps: Grab your 8mm socket and loosen the hose clamp securing the factory intake tube to the throttle body.
  5. Remove the Airbox and Resonator Assembly: Use your 10mm socket and extension to remove the mounting bolt securing the airbox to the inner fender. Unclip the airbox lid, then firmly pull the entire intake tube and lower airbox assembly straight up to pop it out of the lower rubber mounting grommets. Remove the entire assembly from the engine bay.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake Kit for Nissan Frontier (2005-2012) with 4.0L V6 Engine Blue

  1. Transfer the Factory MAF Sensor: Using your #2 Phillips screwdriver, carefully remove the two screws holding the MAF sensor into the factory airbox lid. Pull the sensor straight out. Gently insert it into the precision-machined slot on your new blue intake tube. Secure it using the new hardware provided in the kit.
  2. Assemble and Mount the Heat Shield: Assemble the aftermarket heat shield and rubber edge trim as instructed by the manufacturer. Lower the heat shield into the factory airbox location and bolt it down using your 10mm socket and the provided hardware.
  3. Install the Blue Intake Tube: Slide the provided silicone coupler over the throttle body and pre-install your hose clamps. Slide the new blue intake tube into the coupler, then guide the other end through the heat shield. Tighten the clamps snugly using your 8mm socket.
  4. Connect the Filter and PCV Hose: Slide the high-flow air filter onto the end of the intake tube inside the heat shield and tighten the clamp. Next, route the new provided PCV breather hose from the valve cover to the welded fitting on your new intake tube, securing it with the provided clamps.
  5. Reconnect the Battery and ECU Learn: Plug the MAF sensor wiring harness back into the sensor until it clicks. Finally, reconnect your negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench. On the first startup, do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. This allows the VQ40DE ECU to calibrate its idle parameters to the newly increased airflow.
