Tired of your Mazda 3’s stock intake choking its sporty potential? Unlock a new level of responsiveness and a thrilling engine note with an upgrade that truly transforms your driving experience.
Performance Cold Air Intake Kit for Mazda 3 (2.5L SkyActiv-G)
The factory air box and intake tube on your 2014-2017 Mazda 3 with the 2.5L SkyActiv-G engine are designed for quiet operation, not peak performance. This OEM setup often restricts airflow, leading to a stifled throttle response and limiting your engine’s ability to breathe freely.
This performance cold air intake system replaces those restrictive components with wide-diameter T304 lightweight aluminum piping and a high-flow, washable filter. The integrated heat shield ensures colder, denser air reaches your engine, significantly improving combustion efficiency for measurable gains in horsepower and torque.
Why You Need This Upgrade
- Unlock Hidden Power: Experience up to 10% gains in horsepower and torque by allowing your 2.5L engine to inhale colder, denser air, leading to more complete combustion and enhanced performance.
- Sharper Throttle Response: Eliminate the lag associated with restrictive OEM intake designs, providing immediate and more satisfying acceleration feedback.
- Aggressive Engine Acoustics: Transform your Mazda 3’s sound profile with a deeper, sportier induction roar under acceleration, while maintaining a refined tone during normal cruising.
- Superior Filtration & Durability: Features a reusable, high-flow air filter with a 50,000-mile service interval and T304 lightweight aluminum piping, ensuring long-lasting performance and superior protection against contaminants.
- Engine Bay Aesthetics: The polished black aluminum piping and sleek heat shield add a performance-oriented, custom look under your hood.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time for your 2014-2017 Mazda 3 2.5L
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic hand tools, but wrestling the factory Skyactiv airbox off its lower mounting grommets requires some patience.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm and 12mm sockets with a 6-inch extension and a ratchet
- #2 Phillips head screwdriver (JIS preferred to avoid stripping factory screws)
- Needle-nose pliers (for factory spring clamps)
- Panel popper tool (or a flathead screwdriver for plastic push-clips)
- 8mm socket or 5/16-inch nut driver (for aftermarket worm-gear clamps)
- Allen wrenches (typically 3mm or 4mm for aftermarket sensor bolts)
The factory MAF sensor screws on the BM/BN chassis Mazda 3 strip incredibly easily. Press down firmly with a perfectly sized #2 Phillips before turning to break them loose. Furthermore, the sensitive MAF sensor element is exposed once removed—do not touch the internal bulb with your bare hands. The oils from your skin will distort airflow readings, cause a rough idle, and instantly trigger a Check Engine Light.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory 2014-2017 Mazda 3 2.5L Intake
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and allow the ECU to reset.
- Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor on the factory airbox tube. Slide the red locking tab back, squeeze the connector base, and pull firmly to unplug it. Use a panel popper tool to gently detach the wire harness clip routed along the top of the plastic airbox.
- Remove the Fresh Air Scoop: Use your panel popper tool to pry up the centers of the two plastic push-pins holding the front air scoop above the radiator support. Lift the scoop up and out of the engine bay.
- Loosen Intake Clamps & Hoses: Grab your #2 Phillips screwdriver or 10mm socket to loosen the hose clamp securing the rubber intake tube to the throttle body. Next, use needle-nose pliers to squeeze the spring clamp on the PCV breather hose. Slide the clamp back, then pull the hose off the factory intake tube.
- Extract the Factory Airbox: Remove the two 10mm bolts securing the lower airbox to the chassis. Grip the entire airbox assembly firmly and pull straight up to pop it out of the stubborn rubber mounting grommets. Leave the lower bumper resonator cavity empty.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake Kit for Mazda 3 (2014-2017) with 2.5L 4 Cylinders Engine Black
- Transfer the MAF Sensor: Carefully remove the MAF sensor from the factory airbox using your #2 Phillips screwdriver. Gently insert it into the precision-machined housing on your new intake tube. Secure it using the supplied aftermarket Allen bolts and an Allen wrench. Do not over-tighten, or you will crack the plastic sensor flange.
- Install the Heat Shield & Couplers: Assemble the aftermarket heat shield (if applicable) and bolt it into the factory 10mm mounting locations using your 10mm socket. Slide the silicone throttle body coupler onto the engine and loosely secure the provided worm-gear clamps using an 8mm socket.
- Mount the Intake Tube: Thread the new black aluminum intake tube into the silicone coupler and align it with the heat shield brackets. Reconnect the PCV breather hose to the welded port on the tube, securing it with the factory spring clamp using needle-nose pliers.
- Lock Everything Down: Tighten all throttle body and coupler clamps firmly with your 8mm socket. Reconnect the MAF sensor harness to the transferred sensor, ensuring the red locking tab clicks securely back into place.
- Install the Filter and Relearn: Slide the high-flow conical air filter onto the end of the intake tube and tighten the final clamp with your 8mm socket. Reconnect the negative battery terminal. CRITICAL: On the first startup, the vehicle gas pedal should not be touched for at least 20 seconds. Let the engine idle perfectly still so the Skyactiv ECU can adapt its fuel trims to the newly increased airflow.
