Performance Cold Air Intake Kit for Mazda 3 (BK) (2.3L 4-Cylinder Engine)
The factory air box in your 2004-2009 Mazda 3 2.3L is designed for quiet operation, but it often restricts vital airflow, choking your engine’s ability to breathe freely and hindering its true performance potential.
Our Cold Air Intake Kit replaces this restrictive factory setup with a high-flow, low-restriction system, allowing your engine to draw in colder, denser air. This directly translates to more horsepower and torque, improved throttle response, and a more aggressive engine note, transforming your daily drive.
Why You Need This Upgrade
- Significant Power Gains: Boost horsepower and torque by up to 10%, giving your Mazda 3 a noticeable increase in acceleration and overall performance.
- Enhanced Throttle Response: Experience a more immediate and responsive throttle, making your Mazda 3 feel more agile and engaging to drive.
- Durable & High-Flow Design: Constructed with T304 lightweight aluminum piping for optimal airflow and longevity, paired with an engineered filter for exceptional filtration.
- Sporty Sound & Look: Maximizes airflow through your stock manifold system for a deeper, more aggressive engine sound while adding a performance aesthetic under the hood.
- Low Maintenance: The washable and reusable air filter requires cleaning only every 50,000 miles under normal driving conditions, saving you money on replacements.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 60-90 Minutes
- Difficulty: 4/10 - The actual bolt-up is straightforward, but evicting the factory resonator box from the driver’s side fender well requires some patience and wrestling.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm and 12mm sockets (with a long extension)
- 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver
- Phillips screwdriver (No. 2 size)
- Panel popper tool (for plastic fender liner clips)
- Pliers (for factory spring clamps)
The BK chassis has a universally hated design flaw: a massive, restrictive secondary airbox resonator buried deep inside the driver’s side front bumper area. Do not try to forcefully yank it up through the engine bay! You will break brittle plastics. Jack up the front driver’s side, remove the wheel, and use your panel popper to peel back the fender splash shield. Drop the resonator out from the bottom. Additionally, be incredibly gentle with the factory MAF sensor screws—they strip if you look at them wrong.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part (2004-2009 Mazda 3 2.3L)
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights (CEL) and protect the ECU.
- Remove the MAF Sensor: Locate the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor on the factory intake tube. Press the tab to unplug the wiring harness. Firmly press down with your Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the sensor. Carefully pull the sensor straight out and set it somewhere clean and safe.
- Disconnect Hoses and Clamps: Use your 8mm socket to loosen the hose clamp securing the factory intake tube to the throttle body. Next, use your pliers to pinch the spring clamp on the valve cover breather hose and pull the hose off the intake tube.
- Remove the Upper Airbox: Unclip the metal latches holding the upper airbox halves together. Pull the upper airbox and the corrugated rubber hose off the throttle body and remove them from the engine bay. Remove the factory paper air filter.
- Extract the Lower Airbox and Resonator: Use your 10mm socket and an extension to remove the bolts securing the lower airbox tray in the engine bay. Pull the tray out. Now, working inside the driver’s side wheel well, remove the plastic clips holding the fender liner using your panel popper. Peel the liner back, locate the hidden bolts holding the lower resonator box with your 10mm socket, and drop the bulky plastic box out through the wheel well.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake Kit
- Install the Throttle Body Coupler: Slide the provided silicone coupler over the throttle body of your 2004-2009 Mazda 3 2.3L. Slide two hose clamps loosely over the coupler, then tighten the inner clamp securely against the throttle body using your 8mm socket.
- Transfer the MAF Sensor: Delicately insert your factory MAF sensor into the machined housing on your new intake tube. Ensure the o-ring seats flush. Secure it using the supplied aftermarket hardware and your Phillips screwdriver. Do not over-tighten, or you will crack the sensor base.
- Mount the Intake Tube: Slide the new intake tube into the silicone coupler at the throttle body. Align the welded mounting bracket on the tube with the factory threaded hole on the chassis. Hand-thread the supplied vibration mount or bolt, then tighten it using your 10mm socket. Snug down the outer hose clamp at the throttle body with your 8mm socket.
- Connect the Filter and Breather: Push the valve cover breather hose onto the welded nipple on the new intake tube and secure it with the factory spring clamp using your pliers. Route the lower end of the intake tube into the fender cavity. Slide the high-flow cone filter onto the end of the tube and tighten the clamp with your 8mm socket. Push the fender splash shield back into place and reinstall the clips.
- Reconnect and Calibrate: Plug the wiring harness back into the MAF sensor until it clicks. Reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. Turn the key and start the engine. Do not touch the gas pedal for 20 seconds. Let the vehicle idle so the ECU can adapt to the massive increase in airflow volume without throwing a code.
