Remember that feeling when your Jeep Liberty just needed a little more grunt, a quicker response off the line? This Cold Air Intake isn’t just an upgrade; it’s about giving your 3.7L V6 the unrestricted breath it’s always craved.
Performance Cold Air Intake Kit for Jeep Liberty (2004-2009) (3.7L V6)
The factory air box on your 2004-2009 Jeep Liberty’s 3.7L V6 engine is engineered for quiet operation and cost, not for maximizing your engine’s potential. It typically uses a convoluted intake path and a restrictive paper filter, which chokes airflow and forces your engine to work harder for less power, especially when you need that torque for trails or towing.
This Cold Air Intake kit dramatically improves air delivery by replacing the restrictive OEM setup with a high-flow, low-restriction intake tube and a large, exposed filter element. It’s designed to pull cooler, denser air from outside the hot engine bay, directly feeding your V6 exactly what it needs for more efficient combustion and improved, on-demand power.
Why You Need This Upgrade
- Real-World Power Gains: You’ll feel that immediate difference – not just numbers on a dyno. Expect a noticeable bump in horsepower and torque (5-8% increase is typical), particularly in the mid-range where you need it most for passing or merging.
- Sharper Throttle Response & Efficiency: Ever notice a slight lag when you press the pedal? That’s the engine struggling for air. By reducing intake restriction, you get a crisper pedal feel and better overall engine efficiency, potentially even seeing a slight improvement in fuel economy on daily drives.
- Enhanced Engine Sound: Let’s be honest, we all like a bit of engine music. This isn’t about obnoxious noise; it’s about letting the 3.7L V6 exhale with a deeper, more aggressive growl under acceleration, without being intrusive on the highway.
- Long-Term Value & Durability: Forget constantly buying disposable paper filters. Our washable, reusable high-flow filter saves you money over time, and the T-304 aluminum piping with its polished anodized finish isn’t just for looks – it resists heat soak and corrosion for years of reliable performance.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic bolt-on, but requires a gentle hand with aging engine bay plastics.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm wrench and 10mm deep socket with ratchet
- 8mm socket or standard flathead screwdriver
- Panel popper tool (or needle-nose pliers)
- Silicone spray lubricant or soapy water
If you spend any time on KJ or KK chassis forums, you know the 3.7L PowerTech V6 runs hot and bakes under-hood plastics. The factory PCV breather hose running to the airbox gets rock hard over time and will snap if you bend it too far. Treat it like glass. Secondly, the factory Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor is notoriously stubborn to remove. Do not pry on the sensor element itself; lubricate the rubber grommet before pulling it out of the stock tube.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and clear the ECU memory.
- Unplug the IAT Sensor: To begin removing the factory system on your 2004-2009 Jeep Liberty 3.7L, locate the IAT sensor on the side of the stock intake tube. Gently depress the locking tab and pull the harness free. Use your panel popper to release the wiring harness routing clip from the airbox body so it is completely out of the way.
- Disconnect the Crankcase Breather: Locate the hard plastic PCV breather line running from the oil filler neck area to the factory air resonator. Carefully twist the fitting and slide it off the airbox. Do not bend this line.
- Loosen the Throttle Body: Grab your 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver and loosen the band clamp securing the factory corrugated intake tube to the throttle body. Pull the tube backward to free it.
- Remove the Factory Airbox: Use your 10mm socket to remove the mounting bolts securing the airbox to the passenger side fender area. Once unbolted, firmly pull the entire airbox assembly straight up to pop the lower mounting pegs out of their factory rubber grommets.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake Kit for Jeep Liberty (2004-2009) with 3.7L V6 Engine Black
- Assemble the Heat Shield: Construct the aftermarket heat shield using the supplied hardware and a 10mm wrench. Install the rubber edge trim around the shield to prevent rattling. Drop it into the factory airbox location, pushing it down into the original lower grommets, and bolt it in.
- Transfer the IAT Sensor: Carefully extract the factory IAT sensor from the OEM plastic tube. Push the supplied rubber grommet into the pre-drilled hole on your new black intake tube. Apply a drop of silicone spray to the sensor body and gently push it into the new grommet, ensuring it seats fully without damaging the tip.
- Mount the Intake Tube: Slide the provided silicone coupler over the throttle body and place two hose clamps over it. Tighten the throttle body side slightly with your 8mm socket. Slide the new intake tube through the heat shield and into the coupler.
- Connect Hoses and Filter: Reconnect the factory PCV breather hose to the corresponding welded nipple on the new intake tube. Plug the factory wiring harness back into the IAT sensor until it clicks. Install the new high-flow cone filter onto the end of the tube and lock down all remaining clamps using your 8mm socket.
- ECU Relearn Startup: Reconnect your negative battery terminal with a 10mm wrench. Start the vehicle, but do not touch the gas pedal for 20 seconds. Let the vehicle idle so the ECU can properly adjust its fuel trims to the increased airflow volume.
