Tools You Will Need

  • 8mm nut driver or flathead screwdriver (for factory and aftermarket hose clamps)
  • 13mm socket with a 6-inch extension (for the factory Vortec airbox mounts)
  • T20 Torx bit (if transferring the MAF sensor out of a factory housing)
  • Silicone spray lubricant or soapy water (crucial for sensor seating)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The 4.3L Vortec S-Series platforms are notorious for rock-hard underhood plastics after two decades of heat cycling. The Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor is shoved into a rubber grommet on the factory intake tube. Do NOT just yank it out by the connector. You will snap the fragile plastic sensor tip off inside the tube. Spray the base with silicone lube, twist it back and forth to break the seal, and pull straight out. Also, inspect your factory PCV breather hose—it will likely be brittle and prone to cracking when you remove it.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent a check engine light and reset the ECU’s fuel trims.
  2. Unplug the Sensors: Locate the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor and the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor on the factory air tube. Gently depress the locking tabs and pull the harnesses free. Tuck them safely out of the way.
  3. Remove the Factory PCV Line: Disconnect the factory crankcase vent hose running from the valve cover to the side of the air intake. Twist gently to avoid snapping the valve cover nipple.
  4. Loosen the Clamps: Using your 8mm nut driver, loosen the hose clamps securing the rubber intake tube to the throttle body "hat" and the MAF sensor housing. Wiggle the tube free from the throttle body.
  5. Extract the Factory Vortec Box: Use your 13mm socket and extension to remove the retaining bolt holding the bulky factory airbox to the inner fender. Pull the entire factory airbox and resonator assembly up and out of the engine bay.
  6. Separate the MAF Sensor: Carefully unbolt or unclamp the MAF sensor from the factory airbox assembly. Set it on a clean rag. Do not drop it; the internal hot wires are highly sensitive.

Phase 2: Installing the Blue Cold Air Intake for GMC Sonoma Pickup (1996-2004) 4.3L

  1. Install the Heat Shield: Drop the new aftermarket heat shield into the space where the factory airbox sat. Secure it to the factory mounting points using the supplied hardware and a 10mm socket.
  2. Transfer the Sensors: Insert the provided rubber grommet into the pre-drilled hole on your new Blue Cold Air Intake tube. Apply a quick burst of silicone spray to the grommet, and carefully push the factory IAT sensor into place. Next, bolt or clamp the factory MAF sensor into the new tube grouping. CRITICAL: Ensure the flow arrow stamped on the MAF sensor points toward the engine throttle body, not the air filter.
  3. Mount the Couplers and Tube: Slide the new silicone couplers onto the throttle body and the MAF sensor. Slip the hose clamps on loosely. Guide the new blue intake tube into the couplers. Once everything is aligned nicely, tighten down all clamps firmly with your 8mm nut driver.
  4. Connect the Breather and Filter: Attach the supplied PCV breather hose from the valve cover to the nipple on the new intake pipe. Finally, slide the high-flow conical air filter onto the end of the intake tube inside the heat shield and tighten the clamp.
  5. Final Reconnect and Idle Relearn: Plug the wiring harnesses back into the MAF and IAT sensors. Reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. Start the engine. Do NOT touch the gas pedal for 20 seconds. Let the vehicle idle so the ECU can adapt its fuel maps to the increased airflow.
