Unleash the full potential of your Duramax diesel and experience a newfound surge of power and responsiveness. Say goodbye to the restrictive factory airbox and feel the immediate difference in throttle engagement and engine performance.

Performance Cold Air Intake Kit for GMC Sierra 2500HD/3500 (6.6L V8 Diesel Engine)

Your GMC Sierra’s stock air intake system, while functional, acts as a significant bottleneck, choking the powerful 6.6L Duramax LB7 engine. The factory airbox and corrugated intake tube restrict airflow, elevate intake air temperatures, and hinder your truck’s ability to breathe freely, especially under load when towing or hauling.

This Cold Air Intake Kit is meticulously engineered to eliminate these factory restrictions, delivering a direct and unobstructed path for cool, dense air to reach your engine. By replacing the inefficient OEM components with a high-flow aluminum pipe and a superior washable filter, this upgrade optimizes combustion efficiency, significantly boosting your Sierra’s horsepower, torque, and throttle response.

Why You Need This Upgrade

  • Unleash Horsepower & Torque: Unlock impressive gains of up to 10% in both horsepower and torque, providing your Duramax with the extra muscle needed for demanding tasks and exhilarating daily driving.
  • Sharpened Throttle Response: Eliminate turbo lag and enjoy a more immediate and agile feel from the moment you press the accelerator, transforming your driving experience.
  • Premium T304 Aluminum Construction: Crafted from lightweight, high-grade T304 aluminum, the intake piping ensures optimal air velocity, superior durability, and excellent heat dissipation for consistently cooler air.
  • Exceptional Filtration & Airflow: Engineered with an advanced, high-flow conical filter that maximizes clean air delivery while effectively capturing harmful contaminants, protecting your valuable diesel engine.
  • Aggressive Diesel Engine Note: Experience a more pronounced, deeper engine sound under acceleration, giving your Sierra 2500HD/3500 a powerful and sporty presence on the road.
  • Long-Lasting Washable Filter: The reusable and washable air filter extends service intervals up to 50,000 miles under normal driving conditions, saving you money on disposable filters and maintenance.
  • Easy & Quick Installation: Designed for a direct bolt-on fit, this kit can typically be installed in less than 60 minutes using basic hand tools, making it a straightforward upgrade for any DIY enthusiast.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic hand tools, but requires patience when handling twenty-year-old fragile factory electronics.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm wrench or deep socket (for battery terminals)
  • 8mm socket & ratchet or 5/16-inch nut driver (for heavy-duty band clamps)
  • T20 Torx bit (for factory MAF sensor screws)
  • 4mm Allen wrench (for aftermarket MAF hardware)
  • Panel popper or flathead screwdriver (for wiring harness clips)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The LB7 Duramax community universally dreads removing the factory MAF sensor. The OEM T20 Torx screws have a nasty habit of seizing into the brittle factory plastic housing. Don’t strip them! Apply gentle downward pressure, and if they fight you, use a tiny drop of penetrating oil. Secondly, the 2001-2003 GMC Sierra 6.6L runs a dual-battery setup—you MUST disconnect BOTH negative terminals, or you’ll risk arcing the system and frying the delicate MAF sensor during the swap.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 2001-2003 GMC Sierra 6.6L

  1. Disconnect the Batteries: Always start by disconnecting both negative battery terminals using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and protect the ECU. Push the cables safely out of the way.
  2. Unplug the Sensor: Locate the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor on the factory intake tube. Depress the grey locking tab and pull the plug free. Use a panel popper to pry the plastic wire harness retaining clip out of the intake tube so the harness hangs loose.
  3. Loosen the Clamps: Grab your 8mm socket and loosen the band clamp securing the factory intake tube to the turbo mouthpiece/intake horn.
  4. Yank the Airbox: Firmly grab the factory airbox assembly and pull straight up. It is held into the passenger-side fender tray solely by rubber push-grommets. Wiggle it back and forth to break it loose from years of engine bay heat and road grime.
  5. Extract the MAF Sensor: Place the old tube on your workbench. Use a T20 Torx bit to carefully remove the two screws. Pull the sensor straight out. Do NOT touch the delicate amber glass element inside the sensor! Oil and dirt from your fingers will ruin it.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake Kit

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Carefully slide the factory MAF sensor into your new aftermarket tube. Secure it using the supplied hardware (which usually requires a 4mm Allen wrench). Ensure the directional arrow stamped on the sensor points TOWARD the engine/turbo.
  2. Mount the Heat Shield: Drop the new airbox or heat shield assembly into the factory location. Press firmly down so the new mounting posts seat fully into the OEM rubber grommets on the fender tray.
  3. Secure the Couplers: Slide the provided silicone coupler over the factory turbo mouthpiece. Tighten the lower band clamp until snug using your 8mm socket.
  4. Install the Intake Tube: Slide the new cold air intake tube into the air filter housing, then seat the opposite end into the turbo coupler. Once perfectly aligned, tighten all remaining clamps with the 8mm socket. Plug the MAF sensor harness back in and ensure it clicks securely.
  5. Final System Check: Reconnect both battery terminals with your 10mm wrench. Turn the key. On the first startup, do not touch the gas pedal for 20 seconds. Let the LB7’s ECU idle and automatically adjust to the massive increase in airflow without throwing a code.
