Performance Cold Air Intake Kit for Chevrolet S-10 Pickup (4.3L V6)

The factory air intake system on your Chevrolet S-10 Pickup, especially with the 4.3L V6 engine, is designed for quiet operation and cost-efficiency, not peak performance. Its restrictive tubing, convoluted airbox, and often flimsy paper filter significantly choke the engine’s ability to breathe freely, limiting horsepower, torque, and overall responsiveness.

This Cold Air Intake Kit directly addresses these limitations, replacing your OEM setup with a high-flow, low-restriction design. By drawing in cooler, denser air from outside the engine bay through a premium washable filter and a smooth, mandrel-bent aluminum tube, it dramatically increases airflow to your engine. The result is a noticeable boost in power, improved throttle response, and a more aggressive engine sound that truly reflects your truck’s potential.

Why You Need This Upgrade

  • Increased Power & Torque: Unlock up to 10% more horsepower and torque, translating to better acceleration and towing capability for your S-10.
  • Superior Airflow & Filtration: Engineered with a T304 lightweight aluminum pipe and a high-flow, reusable filter for exceptional filtration and maximized clean air delivery.
  • Sharper Throttle Response: Experience immediate and more efficient acceleration, making passing and merging smoother and more engaging.
  • Aggressive Engine Note: Maximizes airflow through your stock manifold system for a deeper, sportier sound that announces your S-10’s presence.
  • Warranty-Safe Performance: Designed to integrate seamlessly with your vehicle’s systems, ensuring this upgrade will not void your factory warranty.
  • Low Maintenance Filter: The washable and reusable air filter requires cleaning only every 50,000 miles under normal driving conditions, saving you money on replacements.
  • Quick & Easy Installation: Designed for a straightforward bolt-on process, typically taking less than 60 minutes with basic hand tools.

Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
When dealing with the 1996-2004 Chevrolet S-10 4.3L, the biggest headache is the factory "Vortec hat" (the massive plastic resonator on top of the throttle body). It is held down by a single retaining nut. Do not drop this nut down the throat of the throttle body when removing it! Throw a clean shop rag over the throttle blades the second that hat comes off. Also, the factory PCV breather hose on the passenger side is notoriously brittle—wiggle it loose gently to avoid snapping the valve cover nipple.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights while we swap the intake components on your 1996-2004 Chevrolet S-10 4.3L.
  2. Unplug the Sensors: Locate the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor and the IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor on the factory air tube. Use a small flathead screwdriver to gently pry up the locking tabs and disconnect the wiring harnesses.
  3. Remove the Vortec Resonator "Hat": Use your 10mm deep socket to remove the nut securing the large plastic box sitting directly over the throttle body. Lift the box off carefully and immediately cover the open throttle body with a clean rag.
  4. Disconnect the Breather Hose: Use needle-nose pliers to squeeze the spring clamp on the PCV breather hose connected to the factory intake tube. Slide the clamp back and gently twist the hose off to preserve the aging rubber.
  5. Pull the Factory Airbox: Use your 8mm socket to loosen the band clamp securing the tube to the MAF sensor. Next, use your 10mm socket to remove the bolts holding the factory airbox to the passenger-side fender well. Yank the entire bulky assembly out of the engine bay.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Chevrolet S-10 Pickup (1996-2004) 4.3L Engine - Blue

  1. Transfer the Sensors: Carefully pull your factory MAF sensor and IAT sensor from the old intake assembly. Do not touch the MAF wire element! Push the IAT sensor into the rubber grommet provided on your new blue intake tube. Bolt the MAF sensor into the new inline housing if required.
  2. Mount the Heat Shield: Drop the supplied aftermarket heat shield into the factory airbox location. Secure it to the inner fender using the provided hardware and your 10mm socket.
  3. Position the Silicone Couplers: Slide the provided silicone couplers over the throttle body and the MAF sensor. Slip the band clamps over the ends and snug them down just enough to hold their shape using your 8mm socket (leave them loose enough for final adjustment).
  4. Install the New Blue Intake Tube: Route the new blue intake tubing from the throttle body down into the heat shield area. Reconnect the PCV breather hose to the welded nipple on the new tube. Once everything is aligned, tighten all band clamps down firmly with your 8mm socket and clamp the high-flow blue cone filter onto the end of the tube.
  5. Final Startup Procedure: Remove your shop rag from the throttle body area. Plug the MAF and IAT wiring harnesses back in. Reconnect your negative battery terminal. Start the truck, but do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. The factory ECU needs this uninterrupted time to adjust and idle-learn the massive increase in airflow.
