Performance Cold Air Intake Kit for Acura CL (J32A1 V6)

The factory air box in your 2001-2003 Acura CL is designed for quiet operation and cost-effectiveness, often restricting vital airflow to your 3.2L V6 engine. This bottleneck chokes your engine’s ability to breathe, limiting horsepower, torque, and throttle response.

Our high-performance Cold Air Intake Kit directly addresses these limitations, replacing the restrictive OEM setup with a free-flowing T304 lightweight aluminum system. This upgrade delivers a steady stream of cooler, denser air, optimizing combustion and unleashing the hidden power within your J32A1 engine.

Why You Need This Upgrade

  • Significant Power Gains: Boost horsepower and torque by up to 10% by allowing your J32A1 to inhale more cold, dense air.
  • Enhanced Filtration & Airflow: Engineered for exceptional filtration and maximum airflow, protecting your engine while maximizing performance.
  • Improved Throttle Response: Experience sharper acceleration and a more immediate, satisfying response from your 3.2L V6.
  • Aggressive Engine Note: Replaces the restrictive factory intake to maximize airflow, producing a deep, sporty sound under acceleration.
  • Long-Term Value: Features a washable, reusable filter that requires cleaning only every 50,000 miles under normal driving conditions, reducing long-term costs.
  • DIY-Friendly Installation: Designed for easy installation with basic hand tools, taking less than 60 minutes for most enthusiasts.
  • Preserves Warranty: This performance upgrade is engineered to provide gains without voiding your vehicle’s factory warranty.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 60-90 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 4/10 - The engine bay work is simple, but fighting the hidden factory fender resonator box requires patience and elbow grease.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm socket, ratchet, and 6-inch extension
  • 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver (for hose clamps)
  • Panel popper tool (crucial for fender liner clips)
  • Pliers (for breather hose spring clamps)
  • 10mm wrench (for battery terminal)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The universally agreed-upon forum headache for the J32 platform is the massive factory resonator box hidden deep inside the lower driver-side fender well. Don’t try to force it out from the top of the engine bay. Jack up the front-left corner, turn the wheel inward, use a panel popper on the brittle fender liner clips, and unbolt the 10mm bolts from the wheel well. Also, the factory Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor is pressed into the old rubber intake arm—the plastic gets extremely brittle with age, so twist and pull it out delicately to avoid snapping it.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 2001-2003 Acura CL 3.2L

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and allow the ECU to reset.
  2. Disconnect the IAT Sensor and Breather Lines: Locate the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor plugged into the factory rubber J32 intake arm. Delicately wiggle it free—never pull by the wires. Use pliers to squeeze the spring clamps on the valve cover breather hose and pull the hose entirely off the intake tube.
  3. Remove the Upper Airbox Assembly: Loosen the hose clamp at the throttle body using an 8mm socket. Unbolt the 10mm bolts securing the upper airbox to the chassis. Pull the entire rubber arm and upper box out of the engine bay as one unit.
  4. Defeat the J-Series Resonator Box: Turn your steering wheel all the way to the right. Use your panel popper to carefully remove the plastic clips securing the driver-side splash shield/fender liner. Peel the liner back to expose the massive factory resonator box. Remove the hidden 10mm bolts using an extension, and pull the bulky plastic box out through the wheel well.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake on your 2001-2003 Acura CL 3.2L

  1. Mount the Throttle Body Coupler: Slide the provided silicone step-up coupler onto the J32 throttle body. Secure the throttle body side using an 8mm socket to tighten the worm gear clamp. Leave the intake-side clamp loose for now.
  2. Route the Cold Air Pipe: Guide the new aluminum cold air intake pipe down through the engine bay opening into the driver-side fender well area where the old resonator lived. Insert the top end of the pipe into the silicone coupler. Snug down the clamp with your 8mm socket, but do not fully lock it down yet so you have room to adjust.
  3. Transfer the IAT Sensor and Hoses: Carefully push the factory IAT sensor into the pre-drilled rubber grommet on your new aftermarket intake pipe. Reconnect the factory valve cover breather hose to the welded nipple on the new pipe, securing it with the factory spring clamp using pliers.
  4. Install the Filter and Finalize: From inside the wheel well, slide the new conical air filter onto the bottom of the intake pipe. Tighten the filter clamp with your 8mm socket. Fully tighten all upper clamps. Re-install your fender liner clips and ensure the aluminum pipe isn’t rubbing against the bare metal of the chassis opening.
  5. First Startup Protocol: Reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. Start the engine, but do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. The J32 ECU needs this idle time to adapt to the newly introduced airflow and recalibrate without throwing a Check Engine Light.
