Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The 2UZ-FE engine is legendary, but the factory plastics surrounding it are not. The biggest mistake First Gen Tundra and Sequoia owners make is stripping the factory Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor screws. They are technically JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard), not standard Phillips. Press your #2 Phillips firmly into the screw and turn slowly to avoid stripping. Secondly, do not yank the factory PCV and vacuum hoses off the intake tube; after two decades of heat cycling, those hoses are baked hard. Grip them gently with needle-nose pliers and twist to break the seal before pulling.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and clear the ECU’s old fuel trim memory.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the MAF sensor on the factory airbox of your 2000-2003 Toyota Sequoia Tundra 4.7L. Press the tab and gently pull the connector free. Use a panel popper to carefully dislodge the wire harness clip from the factory plastic airbox without snapping it.
  3. Remove the Vacuum Lines: Using your needle-nose pliers, compress the spring clamps on the PCV and vacuum breather hoses attached to the factory intake resonator tube. Twist the hoses gently to break the 20-year-old seal, then slide them off.
  4. Loosen the Hose Clamps: Take your 8mm nut driver or flathead screwdriver and loosen the large factory hose clamp securing the intake tube to the throttle body.
  5. Extract the Factory Airbox: Grab your 10mm socket and remove the three bolts holding the lower airbox assembly to the passenger side inner fender. Lift the entire factory intake and resonator assembly out of the engine bay as one piece.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Toyota Tundra Sequoia (2000-2003) 4.7L Engine

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Using your #2 Phillips screwdriver, carefully remove the two screws holding the MAF sensor into the factory housing. Gently pull the sensor out. Do not touch the delicate amber wire element inside! Insert the MAF into the new billet housing on your cold air intake tube and secure it using the provided aftermarket hardware and an Allen wrench.
  2. Install the Heat Shield: Drop the new aftermarket heat shield into the factory airbox mounting location. Secure it to the inner fender using your 10mm socket and the supplied hardware.
  3. Mount the Silicone Couplers: Slide the provided silicone step-coupler over the 4.7L throttle body. Slip the provided hose clamps loosely over the coupler, but do not tighten them yet.
  4. Route the New Intake Tube: Slide the new cold air intake tube into the throttle body coupler, then lower the filter end into the heat shield compartment. Reconnect your factory PCV and breather lines to the new aluminum fittings, securing them with the factory spring clamps using needle-nose pliers.
  5. Tighten and Reconnect: Align the tube so it doesn’t rub against the fan shroud or A/C lines. Lock down all hose clamps using your 8mm nut driver. Plug the factory wire harness back into the MAF sensor until it clicks. Finally, install the high-flow air filter onto the end of the tube.
  6. The ECU Relearn Protocol: Reconnect your negative battery terminal with the 10mm wrench. Start the vehicle. Do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Let the 2UZ-FE idle so the ECU can adjust its Short Term Fuel Trims (STFT) to the new volume of incoming cold air.
