Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
Tacomaworld veterans know the 2012-2015 1GR-FE 4.0L engine bay got crowded with the addition of the Secondary Air Injection System (SAIS) pump on the passenger side. When removing the factory airbox, do not just yank it upward. You must first carefully disconnect the SAIS breather hose, or you will snap the notoriously brittle factory plastic nipple on the pump. Furthermore, the factory Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor screws are made of incredibly soft metal—use firm downward pressure with your #2 Phillips Screwdriver so you do not strip them.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights from popping up on your 2012-2015 Toyota Tacoma 4.0L.
