Amplify Your Tacoma TRD’s 1GR-FE: Performance Cold Air Intake (2012-2015)
Who It’s For: Designed specifically for Toyota Tacoma TRD owners (2012-2015) running the robust 1GR-FE engine, who are looking to extract more power, improve throttle response, and enjoy a more aggressive sound from their truck.
The Problem: The factory airbox on your Tacoma’s 1GR-FE, while functional, is a restrictive design. It chokes airflow, limiting your engine’s ability to breathe freely, especially when you’re pushing it hard on or off-road. This can lead to a sluggish throttle response and leave valuable horsepower and torque on the table.
The Solution: We engineered this Cold Air Intake to directly address these factory bottlenecks. By replacing the restrictive stock components with a high-flow, performance-tuned system, it dramatically increases airflow, allowing your 1GR-FE to inhale more cold, dense air. The result? Sharper throttle response, noticeable gains in horsepower and torque, and a far more exhilarating engine note.
Why This is the Ultimate Upgrade
- Enhanced Performance & Sound: Experience up to a 10% increase in horsepower and torque. This isn’t just a number; it’s the tangible feeling of your Tacoma pulling harder through the gears and responding instantly to your command. You’ll also notice a deep, sporty engine note that really brings the 1GR-FE to life.
- Superior Durability & Filtration: Crafted from lightweight, T304 aluminum piping, this intake is built to last. The high-performance, washable air filter provides exceptional filtration to protect your engine, requiring cleaning only every 50,000 miles under normal driving conditions — a massive upgrade over frequent disposable filter changes.
- Effortless Installation & Warranty Safe: Designed for a direct-fit replacement of your factory air box and intake tube, installation is straightforward with basic hand tools, typically taking less than an hour. Best of all, this upgrade is engineered not to void your vehicle’s warranty.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic hand tools required. A perfect driveway project for weekend warriors.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm & 12mm Sockets (with a 6-inch extension)
- 3/8-Inch Drive Ratchet
- #2 Phillips Screwdriver
- Flathead Screwdriver or Panel Popper (for releasing wire harness clips)
- 4mm Allen Wrench (frequently required for aftermarket MAF hardware)
- Pliers (for factory spring clamps)
Tacomaworld veterans know the 2012-2015 1GR-FE 4.0L engine bay got crowded with the addition of the Secondary Air Injection System (SAIS) pump on the passenger side. When removing the factory airbox, do not just yank it upward. You must first carefully disconnect the SAIS breather hose, or you will snap the notoriously brittle factory plastic nipple on the pump. Furthermore, the factory Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor screws are made of incredibly soft metal—use firm downward pressure with your #2 Phillips Screwdriver so you do not strip them.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights from popping up on your 2012-2015 Toyota Tacoma 4.0L.
- Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the Mass Air Flow sensor on the factory intake tube. Press the locking tab and pull straight back to disconnect the wiring harness. Use a panel popper or flathead screwdriver to gently pry the wire loom clip free from the airbox housing.
- Remove the Factory MAF Sensor: Use a #2 Phillips Screwdriver to carefully back out the two small factory screws. Pull the MAF sensor straight up and out. Crucial step: Do not touch the amber glass element inside the sensor! Set it aside in a clean, safe location.
- Disconnect the Vacuum and Breather Lines: Use pliers to squeeze the spring clamps on the crankcase vent (PCV) hose and the SAIS breather hose connected to the factory resonator box. Slide the clamps down the hoses, then twist the hoses gently to break the rubber seal before pulling them off.
- Remove the Factory Intake Tube and Airbox: Loosen the primary hose clamp at the throttle body using a 10mm socket. Unclip the top of the factory airbox, then unbolt the lower airbox mounting bolts using a 12mm socket and a 6-inch extension. Lift the entire OEM assembly out of the engine bay.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Toyota Tacoma TRD (2012-2015) 4.0L Engine
- Install the New Heat Shield: Drop the aftermarket heat shield into the factory airbox location. Secure it to the OEM fender and chassis mounting points using your 12mm socket.
- Transfer the MAF Sensor: Insert your delicate factory MAF sensor into the billet flange on the new intake tube. Secure it using the supplied aftermarket hardware (usually requiring a 4mm Allen Wrench). Tighten until just snug—over-tightening will crack the plastic sensor housing.
- Mount the New Intake Tube: Slide the provided silicone coupler over the throttle body of your 2012-2015 Toyota Tacoma 4.0L. Push the new intake tube into the coupler. Align the tube so it does not rub against the SAIS pump or brake lines, then lock down the worm-gear clamps using an 8mm socket.
- Reconnect Hoses and Wiring: Push the factory PCV and SAIS breather hoses onto the new intake tube’s welded aluminum fittings. Route your MAF sensor wiring harness safely away from the serpentine belt and plug it back into the sensor until you feel a distinct click.
- Install the Air Filter and Calibrate: Slide the conical high-flow air filter onto the end of the intake tube inside the heat shield. Tighten the filter clamp with an 8mm socket. Reconnect your negative battery terminal with a 10mm wrench. IMPORTANT: On the first startup, do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Let the vehicle idle so the ECU can properly adjust to the new, higher-volume airflow parameters.
