Cold Air Intake Kit for 1999–2004 Toyota Tacoma 3.4L V6 (5VZ-FE Engine)
Toyota Tacoma (3.4L V6) Airflow Efficiency & Added Torque
Maximize the output of your Tacoma's legendary 5VZ-FE engine with this high-velocity air induction system, specifically engineered for the 3.4L V6 platform. By replacing the restrictive factory air box with a streamlined intake path and an integrated heat barrier, this kit allows your engine to draw in a larger volume of oxygen-rich air while effectively blocking engine bay heat. The result is a more energetic combustion cycle, providing crisper throttle sensitivity and more fluid acceleration whether you are navigating technical trails or cruising the highway.
This system provides a substantial mechanical upgrade that modernizes your engine bay. By maximizing airflow efficiency and maintaining lower intake temperatures, this kit enhances horsepower and torque, giving your Toyota the extra surge needed for towing, hauling, and off-road maneuvers. Beyond the mechanical gains, it grants your V6 a deeper, more authoritative growl under load, perfectly matching the rugged and capable character of the first-generation Tacoma.

Why Upgrade from Factory?
The factory air intake system on your Tacoma prioritizes cost reduction and noise suppression over performance. The restrictive air box and intake tube limit airflow to your engine, leaving power on the table.
Factory Intake Limitations
- Narrow intake tubing creates turbulence and restriction
- Paper air filter requires frequent replacement
- Multiple bends and turns reduce airflow efficiency
- Heat from engine bay warms incoming air, reducing power and efficiency
- Designed for noise reduction and cost savings, not performance
Our cold air intake system addresses all these issues, delivering cooler, denser air to your 5VZ-FE engine for measurable performance gains you can feel every time you drive. With an estimated 15-19 additional horsepower and 18-22 lb-ft of extra torque, your Tacoma will reach approximately 205-209 HP and 238-242 lb-ft of torque with this upgrade.

Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 3/10 - A straightforward bolt-on job, but requires extreme care with 20-year-old factory plastics and the sensitive MAF sensor.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm wrench and 10mm socket (for the battery and hose clamps)
- 12mm socket with a 6-inch extension (for the factory airbox mounting bolts)
- 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver (for the aftermarket silicone coupler clamps)
- JIS #2 screwdriver or a high-quality Phillips head (for the MAF sensor screws)
- Needle-nose pliers (for factory vacuum line clamps)
- Panel popper or trim tool (for detaching wire harness clips)
1st Gen Taco forums are filled with DIYers who snapped the brittle plastic nipples off the factory VSV (Vacuum Switch Valve) or the intake resonator. The 5VZ-FE engine is bulletproof, but after two decades of under-hood heat cycles, these plastics are incredibly fragile. Never pull a vacuum hose straight off. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to gently grip the hose where it meets the plastic nipple, and give it a slight twist to break the seal before pulling it away. Additionally, the factory MAF sensor screws are JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard), not true Phillips. Apply firm downward pressure before turning so you do not strip the heads!
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 1999-2004 Toyota Tacoma 3.4L
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and protect the ECU.
- Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the Mass Air Flow sensor on the factory airbox tube. Depress the tab and pull the plug straight out. Use a panel popper to gently pry the wire harness clip off the factory plastic housing so the harness is completely free.
- Detach the Vacuum Lines: Using your needle-nose pliers, pinch the spring clamps on the factory vacuum lines routing into the intake tube and resonator. Twist the hoses gently to break the seal, then carefully slide them off the brittle plastic VSV nipples.
- Loosen the Intake Clamps: Grab your 10mm socket and loosen the band clamps securing the corrugated intake tube to the throttle body and to the airbox. Pull the factory tube off the throttle body.
- Remove the Factory Airbox: Use a 12mm socket with a 6-inch extension to remove the three bolts holding the lower airbox to the inner fender well. These bolts are notorious for rusting, so apply penetrating oil first if you live in the rust belt. Lift the entire factory airbox assembly out of the engine bay.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Toyota Tacoma (1999-2004) 3.4L Engine - Black
- Transfer the MAF Sensor: Carefully unscrew the MAF sensor from the factory airbox using a JIS #2 screwdriver. Pull the sensor out straight. Treat this sensor like glass; do not touch the internal wire element or spray it with harsh chemicals. Insert the sensor into the new Cold Air Intake tube and secure it using the provided aftermarket hardware.
- Mount the New Heat Shield: Drop the supplied heat shield into the empty space on the fender well. Line up the mounting points and secure it using your 12mm socket and the factory mounting holes.
- Install the Intake Tube: Slide the provided silicone couplers onto the throttle body and the new intake tube. Drop the assembled tube into the heat shield. Once everything is aligned, tighten down all the T-bolt or worm-gear clamps firmly using an 8mm socket.
- Route the Vacuum Lines: Attach the supplied vacuum hoses from the engine’s factory VSV ports to the newly machined fittings on your Cold Air Intake tube. Ensure there are no kinks in the line. Reconnect the MAF sensor wire harness.
- The ECU Relearn Procedure: Reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. Turn the key and start the engine. Do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds! The 1999-2004 Toyota Tacoma 3.4L ECU needs this uninterrupted idle time to read the new airflow dynamics and adjust its air/fuel trims properly.
