Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
If you are wrenching on a 5S-FE, 4A-FE, or 7A-FE engine, the factory VSV (Vacuum Switching Valve) lines run directly to the plastic OEM intake box. After decades of under-hood heat cycles, the plastic nipples on that factory box are incredibly brittle. Do not just yank the vacuum hoses off! Use a pick or gently twist the hose with pliers to break the seal before pulling. Breaking a VSV line means an instant vacuum leak and a hunting idle. Additionally, treat your Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor like glass—do not pull it by the wires.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part on your 1990-1999 Toyota Celica 1.6L 1.8L 2.2L

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and short circuits.
  2. Disconnect the Sensors: Unplug the wiring harness from the IAT sensor (and the Mass Air Flow / Air Flow Meter if your specific trim uses one). Depress the plastic tab fully before pulling the connector. If the harness is secured to the airbox, use a panel popper tool to free the clips.
  3. Unhook Vacuum Lines: Using your needle-nose pliers, squeeze and slide back the metal spring clamps on the breather and VSV hoses attached to the factory intake tube. Carefully twist and pull the hoses free.
  4. Loosen the Throttle Body Clamp: Use a Phillips screwdriver or 10mm socket to loosen the factory hose clamp securing the ribbed rubber intake tube to the throttle body.
  5. Remove the Airbox Assembly: Use your 10mm socket and 12mm socket with an extension to remove the bolts securing the upper and lower halves of the factory resonator box and airbox to the chassis. Lift the entire bulky OEM assembly out of the engine bay.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Toyota Celica ST/GT/GTS

  1. Prep the Silicone Coupler: Slide the provided silicone reducer coupler onto the throttle body. Slip two worm-gear clamps over the coupler, but only tighten the throttle-body side down securely using your 8mm nut driver or flathead screwdriver.
  2. Transfer the IAT Sensor: Gently pull the factory IAT sensor straight out of the OEM airbox. Push the provided rubber grommet into the pre-drilled hole on your new aluminum intake pipe, then carefully seat the IAT sensor into the grommet.
  3. Mount the Intake Pipe: Slide the Cold Air Intake pipe into the silicone coupler on the throttle body. Line up the pipe’s vibration-mount bracket with the factory threaded hole on the chassis. Thread in the supplied bolt and tighten using a 10mm socket. Snug down the remaining clamp on the throttle body coupler.
  4. Route the Vacuum Lines: Connect the supplied vacuum hoses from the valve cover breather and VSV ports to the welded nipples on the new intake pipe. Ensure there are no kinks in the hoses that could restrict vacuum pressure.
  5. Install the Filter and Initialize ECU: Slide the high-flow cone filter onto the end of the intake pipe and tighten the clamp firmly with an 8mm nut driver. Plug the IAT sensor wiring harness back in until it clicks. Reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. On the very first startup, do not touch the gas pedal for 20 seconds; let the vehicle idle untouched so the ECU can properly adjust the fuel trims to match the new airflow parameters.
