High-flow cold air intake delivers 8-10% more horsepower, sharper throttle response, and an aggressive induction note. Complete bolt-on kit with steel heat shield—engineered specifically for the FA20 boxer engine.

More Power. Better Sound. Instant Response.

The FA20 engine in your FR-S, BRZ, or 86 is a rev-happy masterpiece—but the factory intake holds it back. This cold air intake system fixes that. By pulling in cooler, denser air from outside the engine bay, you'll feel the difference the moment you step on the throttle: crisper acceleration, stronger pull through the RPM range, and a sporty induction growl that reminds you why you bought a driver's car in the first place.

Built with a steel heat shield finished in carbon-black powder coat, this kit keeps hot engine air away from the filter. The result? Consistent power gains and improved combustion efficiency, whether you're carving canyons or dailying to work.

What You'll Gain

  • 8-10% Horsepower Increase: Measurable gains at the wheels
  • 6-8% Torque Boost: Stronger acceleration and mid-range pull
  • Sharper Throttle Response: Less lag, more immediate power delivery
  • Performance Sound: Deep induction note under load—no drone during cruise
  • Cooler Air Charge: The heat shield isolates the filter from engine heat for denser intake temps

Built to Last

The steel heat shield protects the high-flow air filter from debris and radiant heat, ensuring long-term performance. The powder-coated finish resists corrosion and looks clean under the hood. Every component is designed to handle the demands of spirited driving and daily use.

Installation

This is a direct bolt-on replacement for the factory airbox. No cutting, no fabrication, and no tune required—though a tune will maximize gains. Install takes 60-90 minutes with basic hand tools. Everything you need is included in the kit.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic hand tools required. The trickiest part is wrestling the factory sound generator out of the engine bay and delicately handling the MAF sensor.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm and 12mm deep sockets with a 6-inch extension
  • #2 Phillips head screwdriver (or a JIS screwdriver to avoid stripping factory MAF screws)
  • Needle-nose pliers (for constant-tension spring clamps)
  • Panel popper or a flathead screwdriver (for the plastic push-clips)
  • Metric hex key set (typically 3mm or 4mm for aftermarket MAF hardware)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The FT86 community universally hates the factory sound generator tube that pumps artificial engine noise into the cabin. When removing it, do not drop the 12mm bolt securing it to the block, and ensure you securely install the firewall plug provided with your new intake to prevent cabin leaks. Furthermore, the FA20’s Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor is highly sensitive. NEVER touch the delicate wire element inside with your fingers or you’ll be buying a costly replacement.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 2013-2019 Toyota 86 2.0L

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and allow the ECU to reset its fuel trims.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Carefully depress the plastic tab on the MAF sensor harness and pull straight back. Use a #2 Phillips screwdriver to extract the two small screws holding the sensor to the airbox. Gently wiggle the MAF sensor out and place it somewhere safe and clean.
  3. Loosen the Hose Clamps: Grab your 10mm socket or Phillips screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp securing the factory rubber intake tube to the throttle body.
  4. Remove the Sound Generator Tube: Use your needle-nose pliers to pinch and slide back the spring clamps on the sound tube. Follow the tube down to the engine block and use a 12mm socket on an extension to remove the bracket bolt. Pull the whole sound generator assembly out of the engine bay.
  5. Extract the Factory Airbox: Use a 10mm socket to remove the three bolts holding the lower airbox housing to the chassis. Use a panel popper to remove the two plastic push-clips securing the front air scoop to the radiator support (careful, these get extremely brittle on 2013-2019 models). Pull the entire factory airbox assembly up and out.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Toyota 86 (2013-2019) 2.0L H4 Engine

  1. Prep the Heat Shield and Tubing: Assemble the aftermarket heat shield and lower the new intake tube into position. Use a 10mm socket to secure the provided brackets to the factory airbox mounting points on the chassis.
  2. Plug the Firewall: Take the billet or rubber firewall plug included with the kit and press it firmly into the hole in the passenger footwell where the factory sound tube used to connect. Do not skip this, or you will have an unsealed cabin.
  3. Connect to the Throttle Body: Slide the new silicone coupler over the throttle body. Slide the new intake pipe into the coupler. Position your T-bolt or worm-gear clamps and tighten them down snugly with an 8mm socket or 10mm socket (depending on your kit’s hardware). Do not overtighten and crush the piping.
  4. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Extremely carefully insert the factory MAF sensor into the machined slot on the new intake pipe. Ensure the factory O-ring is seated flush. Secure it using the provided Allen bolts and a metric hex key. Reconnect the factory wiring harness until it clicks securely.
  5. Mount the Filter and Reconnect Power: Slide the high-flow conical air filter onto the end of the intake pipe and tighten the clamp with an 8mm socket. Double-check all connections, then reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. On the first startup, the vehicle gas pedal should not be touched for 20 seconds; let the FA20 idle so the ECU can adjust its MAF scaling to the new airflow volume.
