Elevate Your FA20: High-Performance Cold Air Intake for FR-S, BRZ & 86
Who It’s For: Designed specifically for Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ, and Toyota 86 owners running the legendary FA20 engine. This is for the enthusiast who demands more out of their platform, whether it’s for spirited daily driving or pushing limits on track days.
The Problem: The factory intake system on these 2.0L H4 engines, while adequate, is inherently restrictive. It pulls in warm air from the engine bay, especially during aggressive driving or in warmer climates. This “heat soak” robs the engine of its potential, leading to sluggish throttle response and noticeable power loss at critical moments. That plastic intake tube and small filter just aren’t cutting it when you want to truly feel the engine’s bite.
The Solution: We engineered this Cold Air Intake to directly address the factory intake limitations. By repositioning the filter to draw in cooler, denser ambient air and protecting it with a robust heat shield, we deliver a consistent charge to your engine. This isn’t just about peak numbers; it’s about a responsive, predictable powerband and an aggressive intake note that matches the car’s character.
Why This is the Ultimate Upgrade
- Performance Gains You’ll Feel: Experience a noticeable bump of 8-10% more horsepower and 6-8% more torque. That means snappier acceleration and more grunt coming out of corners. You’ll feel that immediate difference from a standstill and particularly when you're hitting those mid-range RPMs where the FA20 loves to live.
- Superior Airflow & Filtration: Our high-flow, reusable air filter is designed for maximum airflow without compromising on filtration, ensuring your engine breathes clean while making more power. From years of wrenching, I can tell you that a clean, cool air supply is the first step to reliable performance.
- Engine Bay Aesthetics & Protection: The precision-engineered steel heat shield, finished in a durable carbon-black powder coating, not only looks fantastic but effectively isolates the filter from engine heat and debris, ensuring consistent cold air delivery and extending filter life. It’s not just about flash; it’s about function and protecting your investment under the hood.
- Effortless Installation: This is a true bolt-on upgrade. With all necessary mounting hardware included and no modifications required, you’ll have it installed with basic hand tools, transforming your ride in no time. If you’ve ever changed an air filter, you’ve got this.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 3/10 - A straightforward bolt-on job, but requires extreme care with the delicate FA20 mass airflow sensor and brittle factory plastic clips.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm and 12mm deep sockets (with ratchet and extension)
- 10mm combination wrench (for the battery terminal)
- JIS #2 screwdriver (or a very snug, brand new Phillips #2)
- Flathead screwdriver or 5/16-inch nut driver (for worm gear clamps)
- Needle-nose pliers (for factory spring clamps)
- Plastic panel popper tool (for bumper cover/intake snorkel clips)
The FT86/FA20 platform is notorious for stripping the factory MAF sensor screws. They are not standard Phillips head; they are JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard). If you jam a worn-out Phillips in there, you will strip the heads instantly. Press down firmly with a JIS #2 or a brand new Phillips #2, and break them loose by hand, never with a power tool. Also, be prepared for the brittle sound generator tube plastic to crack upon removal.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal on your 2013-2019 Toyota 86 2.0L using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights. Tuck the cable away from the post.
- Isolate the MAF Sensor: Locate the Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor on the factory intake tube. Press the locking tab on the grey connector and pull gently to unplug it. Do not pull by the wires. Use your JIS #2 screwdriver to remove the two screws. Pull the sensor straight out, place it in a clean ziplock bag, and set it far away from your work area.
- Delete the Sound Generator Tube: The 86 platform features a factory sound tube that pipes intake noise to the firewall. Use your pliers to squeeze the spring clamp at the intake tube, and use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to unbolt the bracket mounts routing it toward the cabin. Pull the tube assembly out to declutter the engine bay.
- Loosen the Factory Clamps: Grab your flathead screwdriver or 5/16-inch nut driver and loosen the large worm gear clamp securing the rubber intake hose to the throttle body.
- Extract the FA20 Airbox: Use a panel popper to remove the plastic push-clips holding the front air scoop (snorkel) in place. Then, use a 10mm socket on a long extension to remove the three mounting bolts securing the lower factory airbox to the chassis. Lift the entire box and tube assembly out of the engine bay.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Toyota 86 (2013-2019) 2.0L Engine
- Prep the Aftermarket Heat Shield: If your kit includes a replacement airbox or heat shield, drop it into the factory mounting locations. Secure it using the provided hardware and tighten with your 10mm socket or the Allen wrenches provided in your kit.
- Install the New Silicone Couplers: Slide the new silicone coupler onto the throttle body. Slip two new worm gear clamps over the coupler, but keep them loose. Insert the new intake tube into the coupler and position it so it doesn’t rub against the AC lines or alternator pulleys. Snug down the clamps with your 5/16-inch nut driver.
- Transfer the MAF Sensor: Retrieve your MAF sensor. Carefully insert it into the precision-machined slot on the new intake tube. Ensure the O-ring is seated flush to avoid vacuum leaks. Secure it using the new hardware (usually Allen head bolts) provided with the kit. Reconnect the factory wiring harness until you hear it click.
- Mount the High-Flow Filter and Plug the Firewall: Attach your new performance air filter to the end of the intake tube, tightening the clamp securely with your flathead screwdriver. Since you removed the sound tube, insert the provided billet or rubber plug into the open hole on the firewall to seal the cabin.
- The ECU Relearn (First Startup): Double-check all clamps, bolts, and the MAF connection. Reconnect your negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. Start the engine. CRITICAL: Do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Let the 2.0L FA20 idle. The ECU needs this uninterrupted time to read the new airflow volume and recalibrate the fuel trims to prevent stalling or throwing a Check Engine Light.
