Toyota 4Runner (3.4L V6) High-Performance Air Induction System
If you're behind the wheel of a third-generation 4Runner, you already know what this SUV stands for—legendary off-road capability, unshakable reliability, and a V6 that refuses to quit. The 5VZ-FE engine that powers your rig has carried adventurers through deserts, over mountain passes, and deep into backcountry trails for decades. Now it's time to give that proven powerplant the airflow it deserves.
This precision-engineered air induction system transforms your 4Runner's breathing dynamics by eliminating the factory airbox bottleneck and replacing it with a streamlined, heat-shielded intake path. The integrated thermal barrier actively blocks scorching engine bay temperatures, ensuring your V6 draws in dense, oxygen-rich air with every revolution. What you get is sharper throttle response, smoother power delivery, and a noticeable surge in both horsepower and torque—up to 10% gains that you'll feel when merging onto the highway, towing your gear, or conquering steep inclines.
Beyond the performance boost, this system awakens the 4Runner's mechanical soul. Under acceleration, you'll hear a deeper, more commanding growl that matches the truck's rugged character—a satisfying reminder that your SUV is built for more than just pavement. Whether you're hauling a trailer to the trailhead or navigating technical rock gardens, the added power and responsiveness make every drive more capable and engaging.
Why This Upgrade Matters
- Integrated Heat Shield: Isolates the air filter from radiant engine heat, maintaining cooler, denser intake air for consistent performance
- Up to 10% Power Increase: Optimizes air-to-fuel ratios to unlock hidden horsepower and torque from your 3.4L V6
- Instant Throttle Response: Eliminates intake lag and turbulence for immediate power delivery the moment you hit the accelerator
- Premium Reusable Filter: High-flow filtration protects your engine while maximizing airflow—washable and reusable for long-term savings
- True Bolt-On Install: Uses factory mounting points and basic hand tools for a straightforward installation
Designed for Your Adventure
Fits 1999–2004 Toyota 4Runner models equipped with the 3.4L V6 engine, across all trim levels. Every component is engineered to deliver reliable performance in the harshest conditions—just like your 4Runner.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 2/10 - Beginner friendly, basic hand tools needed.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm Socket & Ratchet (The Toyota standard; you will use this for 90% of the job)
- 12mm Socket (For the main airbox mounting bolts)
- 6-inch Extension (To reach the lower bolts on the factory airbox)
- #2 Phillips Screwdriver (Crucial for the MAF sensor)
- Needle Nose Pliers (For removing factory spring clamps on vacuum lines)
- 2.5mm or 3mm Hex Key (Usually required for aftermarket MAF screws)
On the 3.4L 5VZ-FE engine, the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor screws are notoriously soft. Use a high-quality #2 Phillips screwdriver and apply firm downward pressure to avoid stripping the heads. Also, the sensor bulb is extremely sensitive—do not touch the filament with your fingers, or the oils from your skin will cause erratic idling and a Check Engine Light (CEL).
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Airbox
- Disconnect the Battery: Isolate the electrical system by removing the negative terminal using a 10mm wrench. This resets the ECU so it can relearn the new airflow parameters for your 1999-2004 Toyota 4Runner 3.4L immediately.
- Unplug the Sensors: Locate the MAF sensor on the factory air tube near the airbox. Squeeze the tab and gently pull the harness connector off. Detach the wire loom clip from the airbox using a panel popper or flathead screwdriver.
- Disconnect Vacuum Lines: Using needle nose pliers, slide the spring clamps back and disconnect the PCV breather hose and the vacuum line connected to the factory intake resonator. Note which hose goes where.
- Remove the Intake Tube: Loosen the hose clamp at the throttle body using a 10mm socket or Phillips driver. Pull the tube free from the throttle body.
- Extract the Airbox: Remove the three bolts securing the lower airbox to the fender well using a 12mm socket with an extension. Lift the entire factory assembly (box and tube) out of the engine bay in one piece.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Toyota 4-Runner (1999-2004) 3.4L V6 Engine - Red
- Transfer the MAF Sensor: Carefully unscrew the MAF sensor from the factory housing. Inspect the O-ring for cracks. Install it into the new Red Intake Pipe using the supplied hardware (usually a 2.5mm or 3mm Allen key). Do not over-tighten, or you will crack the sensor flange.
- Install the Heat Shield: Bolt the new heat shield into the truck using the factory mounting points on the fender well and the original 12mm bolts. Ensure the rubber weather stripping is pressed firmly along the top edge to seal against the hood.
- Mount the Couplers: Slide the silicone reducer coupler onto the throttle body and secure it with a hose clamp using a 10mm socket (or flathead). Insert the new Red Intake Pipe into the coupler but leave the clamps loose for adjustment.
- Connect Hoses & Filter: Reconnect the PCV and vacuum lines to the nipples on the new intake pipe. Install the cone filter onto the end of the pipe inside the heat shield. Once everything is aligned and not rubbing against the fan shroud or brake lines, tighten all hose clamps firmly.
- Reconnect & Relearn: Plug the MAF sensor harness back in. Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Start the engine and let it idle without touching the gas pedal for at least 60 seconds. This allows the ECU to calibrate to the increased airflow of the 3.4L Cold Air Intake.
