Performance Cold Air Intake Induction Kit for 2013–2018 FR-S & BRZ 2.0L – High-Velocity Induction & Heat Shield Efficiency

For drivers who understand what the FA20 flat-four is truly capable of, this cold air intake system represents the first essential step toward unlocking the legendary potential of your FR-S or BRZ. Born from a motorsport heritage that demands precision and responsiveness, these lightweight rear-wheel-drive platforms were engineered for driver engagement—and this intake amplifies that philosophy by removing the single biggest airflow bottleneck: the restrictive factory air box.

Breathe Life Into the Boxer Engine

Replace the bulky stock induction system with a streamlined, high-flow design that feeds your 2.0L horizontally-opposed engine with cooler, denser air. The result? Sharper throttle response, improved acceleration through the mid-range, and a noticeable surge in usable power that transforms every canyon run and autocross session. This isn't just about horsepower numbers—it's about reclaiming the raw, analog driving experience that made the FR-S and BRZ instant enthusiast favorites.

Engineered for Performance, Built for Heat Defense

The integrated application-specific heat shield doesn't just look aggressive—it actively defends against engine bay heat soak, preserving intake air temperatures even during extended spirited driving. By maintaining cooler, oxygen-rich air delivery, your flat-four operates at peak efficiency while rewarding you with a deeper, more pronounced induction growl that perfectly complements the boxer rumble beneath the hood.

Vehicle Fitment

Installation Guidance

Critical First Step: Disconnect the negative battery terminal before beginning installation and leave it disconnected for at least 60 seconds. This allows the ECU to reset and properly recalibrate to the enhanced airflow characteristics, ensuring immediate performance gains. Always work on a completely cooled engine for safety and optimal fitment.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - Straightforward bolt-on, but requires extreme care with the sensitive factory MAF sensor.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm socket and wrench (Essential for battery and airbox bolts)
  • 8mm socket (For factory and aftermarket band clamps)
  • Philips head screwdriver (For MAF sensor transfer)
  • Pliers (For the factory sound tube spring clamps)
  • Panel popper (For the brittle factory snorkel clips)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The FT86 community universally agrees: the factory sound generator tube is useless clutter that pipes artificial noise into the cabin, often causing vacuum leaks as the plastics age. Deleting it during this install is a massive upgrade. Furthermore, the FA20 engine’s Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor is incredibly sensitive. If you touch the amber diode with your bare hands, the oils will foul the sensor and throw your car straight into limp mode. Handle it by the plastic housing only!

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal on your 2013-2018 Scion FR-S 2.0L using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and allow the ECU to wipe its fuel trims.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Carefully depress the tab on the factory MAF sensor harness and pull straight up. Unclip the wire harness loom from the side of the factory airbox so it hangs safely out of the way.
  3. Delete the Sound Generator Tube: Use your pliers to squeeze the spring clamp on the corrugated sound tube attached to the main intake hose. Wiggle it free. This entire tube assembly can be unbolted using your 10mm socket and permanently removed from the engine bay.
  4. Loosen the Throttle Body Clamp: Take your 8mm socket and loosen the band clamp securing the factory intake hose to the throttle body.
  5. Extract the Factory Airbox: Grab your 10mm socket with a short extension to remove the three bolts securing the lower airbox to the chassis. Use a panel popper to gently pry up the two brittle plastic clips holding the front air snorkel. Lift the entire OEM intake assembly out of the engine bay as one unit.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Using your Philips head screwdriver, remove the two small screws holding the MAF sensor in the factory housing. Gently pull it out. Do not touch the sensor element. Slide it into your new Cold Air Intake tube and secure it with the provided aftermarket hardware.
  2. Install the Heat Shield: Drop the new aftermarket heat shield into the factory lower airbox mounting locations. Bolt it down snug using your 10mm socket and the provided hardware. Don’t overtighten and crush the factory mounting grommets.
  3. Mount the Intake Tube: Slide the provided silicone couplers onto the throttle body and the new intake tube. Insert the tube into the heat shield, attach the high-flow cone filter, and tighten all band clamps firmly using your 8mm socket.
  4. Plug the Sound Tube Hole: Most aftermarket intakes for this platform include a billet or rubber plug. Shove it firmly into the open hole on the passenger-side firewall where the factory sound generator used to pass through. This seals the cabin from unwanted engine bay heat and drafts.
  5. Reconnect and Relearn: Plug the MAF sensor harness back in until it clicks. Reconnect the negative battery terminal using your 10mm wrench. On the very first startup, do not touch the gas pedal for 20 seconds. Let the vehicle idle so the ECU can adapt to the increased airflow volume without triggering a rough idle or stalling out.
